    Fastest Flash Drive

I have at last, after many attempts, managed to install XP Pro onto a flash drive.
It works OK but is slower than I had expected so I am on the look out for a faster 4GB drive.

I cannot find a Patriot Xporter XT in Thailand.
What's the fastest thumb drive available in Thailand ?

This maybe a dumb question, but aren't flash drives slowed down to the speed of the usb port?

    ^Yes and ....yes

USB 2.0 has a raw data rate at 480Mbps
As far as we know, effective rate reaches at 40MBps or 320Mbps for bulk transfer on a USB 2.0 hard drive with no one else is sharing the bus. Flash Drives seem to be catching up too with the some hitting 30MB/s milestone. For all we know, USB interface could become become the bottleneck for flash drives as early as 2008.

You don't need more if you only use your LAN for accessing internet.
It's a good idea to upgrade though if you have a high traffic on your internal LAN, like if you often copy movies between computers or are streaming videos from one computer to another.
A 10/100 card is only a few hundred baht.

I haven't found any in your list in Thailand.
A 30mb/s would be great but anythng in the 20's will be a big improvement.
The fastest I have found was KingMax Super Stick but when I ordered them they were out of stock.

NickA's test protocols are 2 years old and much happens in that time.

Here is a more recent test but I can still not find any of the good ones being sold in Thailand.

does it have to be XP ?
are you just looking for a bootable computer on a stick that saves all changes to the USB drive when it shuts down ?

Doesn't have to be XP but it makes sense to use an OS that I am familiar with

My initial thinking was that it would be useful if I had a HD failure.
I could still boot up, access the web, answer emails and backup any files still usable.

put UBCD4win on a USB stick and see what you think

I used to burn it onto a disk and boot it to disinfect computers , but I would be burning a new disk everytime I updated the malware ref files for the progs I was using. Now I have it on a USB stick as most comps will boot from USB and I just update the refs onto it.

I have recovered HD's using UBCD4win that made sounds like the charge of the light brigade when they spun.

also have a look at pendrivelinux.com and try a few of the setups there
If you torture data for enough time , you can get it to say what you want.
