Anybody know much about this, how it works if you want to have a couple of specific words come up tops all the time on some of the more popular search engines...cost involved if any etc.

Depends on the words, if you wanted "Sex" and "Lesbian" it would cost you thousands upon thousands of dollars, if you wanted "Thai Stripey greeny colored red lepricons" then a couple of thousand baht

Ok, if we need an example of a word and not a new word for a scamming lepre....lets use our beloved 'Thailand' .......what is involved in getting this word out there and in top hits on search engines.

Also don't search engines change the way they search regulalry....so you have to update whatever it is you do regulalry to keep your word coming up...is this right ??

type in a word and it gives you a rough estimate of how many searches there are for that word, if you use Google Adwords it give you an idea of the amount of competition when you use PPC (Pay Per Click) along with how much you might pay for the clicks.

Getting in the organic first 10 results for a niche market or word is going to be far easier than getting in the first 10 for something broad like "Thailand"

So you want a price to get you site to show on the first page for the search term "Thailand?"
you've picked a highly competitive term. there are 269,000,000 otehr sites indexed for that word competing with you.
TO beat out sites like Thailand.com, TourismThailand.com or Lonelyplanet.com, etc; you need a long-term plan.

If you were my client I would tell you to start with a long-term plan focusing on phrases that contained Thailand in them. The first phase would be to identify keyword phrases containing "Thailand" that have less competition and gets searches. to do that that you would use several online research tools to identify terms that get searches with a much better search:competition ratio.

Then you begin to optimize your content and promote your site using those phrases. Remembering your ultimate goal. Add content on a regular basis.

The SEs do change algorithms (at least google does and they will be a source of about 70% of your traffic) BUT good SEO techniques that rely on content, cleanly coded and properly optimized sites do not need to change their strategy every time a new algo is released.

Most of the updates are to help eliminate teh trickery and sneaky SEO, commonly referred to as "Black Hat." You can get top results in MSN with some pretty devious shit that would get you banned from google.

Proper SEO is a phased process; for new sites in particular. You do not concentrate on one ultimate goal but build a site that is indexed and places well on the SERPs for many different phrases. It requires research, planning, constant updates to your content, knowing your competition.

Going after Thailand with a plan to ramp up from lower competition terms is it would be the way to go and is doable but would take time and some real work .

I set a site up about 6 months ago, it took about 2 weeks for Google to index it and for it to show if you search for the URL.

For one of the products on there Im on first or second page but its not a highly searched for item and has a unique-ish name, for another product Im on something like the 15th or over which is why Im using Adwords/PPC for that product. It takes time like FF says.

Any tips from FF would be more than welcome

I had a site that would consistently place top four in SERPs for a quite a few strongly related terms. the competition for these terms was about 2.5 million. At one time the home page had a PR of 4. It now ranks 2.

The site was a proof of concept for me and I have not updated it for over three years (a very good reason for the drop in rank) it does not place top four any more. I was surprised it did as well as it did for as long as it did.

Nothng has changed. AND THIS IS THE PROBLEM. I have not changed, or added to, the content. I don't want the traffic right now but the domain name is still a viable contender and when I have time I will rework it completely in another direction but with additional, more generalized content.

With one google add it buys me a few beers and pays for itself for now this is enough.

I'vw just added Google Adsense to two of my sites, but the ads don't show yet. It takes up to 2 days apparently.

I'd rather not. It's hardly representative of my work and it is slowly dieing on the vine (as intended).
I am not working the site in any way and prefer to let it languish, I know it needs a complete re-work to be what it could be. Might be a project for next year if I can get a Round Tuit.

No probs. I was just looking for pointers about setting a site up just for the revenue from google ads, like you mentioned, pay for itself and a few beers along the way.

Just setup an account at http://adsense.google.com, create your ad. I try to make mine appear much the same as my page content. The interface doesn't generate code for you anymore as far as I can see, but it will show you an example of what you've created.

Follow the instructions on how to implement the ad. Ad positioning can have an impact on click through rate and they have some pages on how to optimize the ad's value. The ads also make a great filler in a spot that might look otherwise dead.

if your page layout allows, try to use a positioning scheme that allows you to put the ad call after all your content loads, if at all possible (pretty close to impossible with a table layout). Google adsense, adwords and analytics seem to be serving up slower and slower lately and f you can get your page content loaded while google is deciding to serve up your ad at least the page won't appear to load so damn slow...

It does, but it might be done differently on the Google website now to when you did it before.

I mean generate code with all the vars listed that you can edit to control display, etc. it generates a small snippet that then loads he code from their servers, all the vars are stored on the sever according to a unique identifier.

I prefer to roll my own...
