Is VR the next big thing?

I say that because the first of three things required has happened already, and the next two are on their way.

The Samsung Gear VR is a $99 headset that works spectacularly well for the price.

The second thing is the arrival of the Samsung 360 Camera in the second quarter. This is going to revolutionise home made video and photography.

And Youtube have just announced the third:

    360 VR streaming.

You'll be able to attend a concert halfway around the world and look around the room as if you were there, with spatial audio to boot.

Sports events? Results may vary, but certainly those cameras they hang over the pitch at football matches can go VR.

And F1 will again be testing VR cameras on the cars at the next GP.

Imagine doing a geography lesson at school and being taught about Africa - and then going and standing in the middle of a reserve?

The options are endless, and now it's really in the price range for consumers.

I'm telling you lads, this is going to be a game changer.

And don't even get me started on blueys....

Immersive video is gaining more features for YouTube viewers, 14 months after YouTube introduced 360-degree video support in March 2015.

YouTube has bolstered its 360-degree video offerings with its latest technical addition—live streaming capabilities and spatial audio.
The new features were unveiled in an April 18 post by Neal Mohan, YouTube's chief product officer, on The YouTube Blog.
In the past, YouTube content creators could create 360-degree content, but could not live stream it. YouTube first launched support for 360-degree videos in March 2015 and has continued to develop its possibilities.
With the new live streaming capabilities, content creators will now be able to add new features to their events from around the world, according to YouTube.
"And after years of live streaming Coachella for fans around the world who can't attend the festival, this year we're bringing you the festival like never before by live streaming select artist performances in 360 degrees this weekend," wrote Mohan.

the HTC Vive seems to be the winner in the reviews

but you need a fair specced PC with a 980 video card at least for both the Vive and the Rift

add to that 800 USD to buy the VR rig itself

I have just bought the bits to put together a decent machine ( detailed in the what computer thread - 35k Baht ) - except I will use the R7 260x I have for the time being

part of the thought was maybe in 6 months I would get myself a Vive and a geforce 980 ( 21k baht in itself ) - and maybe a 950 M2 drive

and you can't get a Vive or Rift at the moment as they are both sold out as far as the online articles seem to be saying
If you torture data for enough time , you can get it to say what you want.

It's a plastic version of Google Cardboard and needs an expensive mobile phone slotted in the front. Without that £600 phone it doesn't do anything.

the problem with this is that when you hold up your smartphone to video the concert, all you'll record is the other side of your lounge

Yes, it takes new model Samsungs, but nothing else will integrate the headset, camera and player(phone) for probably around $1000.

And you control the camera from the phone, you can view it on the phone in real time, and the phone will do the stitching for you (the camera has two 195 degree lenses).

    The underlying technology is Oculus.

Oh and you will be able to upload your video directly to Google Streetview, which has saved those bastards having to go out and reshoot all that shit they've got on there.

True. Almost as much of a [at][at][at][at] as someone who pays £99 quid for a VR device that's basically a hole that you strap to your face.

    £9.99

Anyway, the Gear IS fun and it is pretty good for the price.

I've pre-ordered a PS VR headset (for the boy, of course ), not the greatest spec but still looks pretty good, and I may get an Oculus Rift (I tried the dev version) if it ever emerges from the mists of RealSoonNow.

Do you know the difference between dollars and pounds?

I pay $0 for my phones, which is roughly equivalent to 0 pounds sterling.

And you've obviously never seen the headset, have you?

But as said, there is a cheap cardboard version for TEFLers.

Funny you should say that, considering that most of his recent work has been for Sky....

Sky has become one of the first big-name broadcaster to put its weight behind new virtual reality technologies with a dedicated in-house team.

The broadcaster has set up a production unit called Sky VR Studio to produce content initially for Facebook’s 360-degree video platform, viewable through the social network’s website and mobile apps. The Sky content will also be available for Facebook’s Oculus platform, including the Rift and Samsung Gear VR headsets.

It will also launch a dedicated Sky VR app, with the aim of reaching as many people as possible.

The broadcaster has committed to producing more than 20 videos across sports, movies, news and entertainment genres in 2016, starting with two F1 VR experiences, made in partnership with Formula One Management and the Williams F1 team.

I wonder if because of VR, no one actually bothers to go to Africa or anywhere else because they think that they don't need to.

Not everyone can afford to travel the world pseudopuss.

Some of them teach English in Thailand for example.

But yes, the potential ramifications are obvious.

    Just watch the movie "Surrogates".

It's where everyone stays at home and experiences life through a VR representation of themselves.

Here's what your life will be like.

VR is just opium for the elite. Once you are all subdued and flabby, the meek shall inherit your condo. hahahahahah

    I wonder if the VR comes with instructions;

1 -at point of ordering, fill bath with water and shit and piss in that. Add dead carcasses for added effect
2 - When VR setup thing arrives, it is yours, unless an American company wants it, and then it will be theirs
3 - Turn heating up, open toilet door to allow smell and flies in, and enjoy the Africa VR experience.
4 - There is no need to tell your friends you are going on a VR experience because if you like VR, then you will clearly have no friends anyway, and your family will think you are a c u n t as well.

It's a business rather than a direct tech issue. I'm involved (as an engineer) in negotiations for what may end up being a couple of million of the things and will have direct access the oculus developers and engineers and to major studios developing for oculus.

You might have an untapped market there pseudopuss:

    Scratch and Sniff VR.

Get a few tins of kippers in for the porn experience, etc.

    About what I expected.

Samsung has launched the Gear 360 in South Korea for 399,300 Korean Won, or the equivalent of $350.
And they announced yesterday that they are working on a standalone headset.
