Thread: IP address Geolocation

Anyone recommend an accurate on line or application for geolocation of IP address.(from email header)?

Tried a few but get what seems to be the location of the email server..pumped in my sister's UK Hotmail IP address as a test and came up with California.??

IP addresses are registered at the ISP's office address, sometimes the regional office sometimes the head office.
You can not pinpoint an IP address any closer than that but the ISP do of course know from their customer connection logs the exact position but they don't disclose it to the public.

Yeah, you're mostly just going to get ISP head offices.

Yup figured the scenario of firmware fixed IP address of ISP or other WIFI server.....

Wonder how the likes of Facebook and all web sites automatically know your location..more sophisticated software than is available to us plebs I guess.

Mostly from correlating IP address with mobile device/cell information or GPS. If I open maps.google.com on my wired network, it gives my location as being right where my ISP's main office is.

If I do it on the phone, it's pretty well where I am.

There is no certainty. Sometimes it is possible to be accurate (the correct town or city, for example). Other times it is not possible (an incorrect town or city is given, and sometimes the head office location is given).
