    Mac Book Air Basics

    I'm getting a free one.*

I have not used a Mac since the old Apple IIe days circa 1983. What do I need to know? I know the command button works the same as cntrl button in Microsoft laptops but that's about the extent of my knowledge....

Advice, congratulations and jeers all gratefully appreciated.

    * Doubting Daves; choose your explanation.

    a) Maybe I won it,
    b) Maybe my job gave it to me...if I have one,
    c) I bought it cheap off the back of a lorry,
    d) the whole thing is a story to generate posts.

It confused the hell out of me when I tried one for a while after a similar amount of times using windows. I'm jumping back to apple soon though so will be interesting how you get on.

My thoughts - it floated past your house in a flood and you grabbed it.

Along with a lot of other neat software Macs come with a 3D graphing application called Grapher hidden away in the Utilities folder.

    If you enter:

    x^2+y^3+z^3+20cos(x)=25

in the equation line it plots boobs and gently rotates them through 360º!

Now I do think that is very useful. However, and do not take this personally, but who in the world is sad enough to do that, and also, how the hell would you find this out?

    Grapher has practical applications too:

Not sure how to do that, but Google knows, search for this:

    exp(-((x-4)^2+(y-4)^2)^2/1000) + exp(-((x+4)^2+(y+4)^2)^2/1000) + 0.1exp(-((x+4)^2+(y+4)^2)^2)+0.1exp(-((x -4)^2+(y-4)^2)^2)

If you want to look busy while you go off for a coffee or a smoke then open up Terminal drag the lower right corner to make it a bit bigger than the default window size and enter:

    Code:
     cat /dev/urandom | hexdump -C | grep "ca fe"
    Green ca fe:
    Code:
    export GREP_COLOR='1;32'; cat /dev/urandom | hexdump -C | grep --color=auto "ca fe"
This version is easier on the CPU:
    Code:
    while [ true ]; do head -n 100 /dev/urandom; sleep .1; done | hexdump -C | grep "ca fe"
Easy on the CPU with colour & flashing!
    Code:
    export GREP_COLOR='05;31'; while [ true ]; do head -n 100 /dev/urandom; sleep .1; done | hexdump -C | grep --color=auto "ca fe"
Then press enter. Ctrl+C to stop it.

That's exactly what a user interface should do: stay out of your way and be natural and intuitive to use. If Apple have even managed to convince an imbecile like you they must be doing something right.
