Internet in the jungle of Isaan

Dear TD members! Can anyone help on this? My wife is living in an area without any landlines and has just bought a desktop computer so we can connect everyday by Skype with video and that's fine BUT, it hardly works - sometimes a few minutes sometimes 5 seconds. As far as the missus can tell she has a box from AIS(???) with a 30 hr a month connection. She is like most thai women no expert in anything that has to do with computers/internet.
The house is about 75 km east of Udon Thani, 36 km west of Sawang Daen Din - not an area with many farangs but I hope there will be at least a few who knows the problem. Last year when I was there I had my own mobile broadband USB-stick with me and worked fine on a aIS/12Call SIM card with 30 days unlimited internet for about 999 THB (me thinks?). As far as I know the closest village with landline is about 10 km away so not a good idea to get landline to our village - will cost too much.
Soooo, can anyone give a good advice on what's best option to get her pc working with Skype out there in the middle of nowhere?
    - mai pen rai cos TIT

ask her to use her mobile, using 009 for international calls is very cheap, like 3 THB a min

forget Skype, it's free but it's shit

calling every day for 10min will be less 1000 THB monthly

Have been thinking of that but then you miss the video option which is important?

You could try one of those satellite dishes from TOT. Quite expensive though, I think the fastest package is 2,200 bt.

outside bangkok I think CAT EVDO is probably the best bang for your buck - 800 baht per month unlimited ( usb modem is about 3k baht ) and with optimum signal , 3 meg down , 750K up

This sounds like a good deal - maybe I can bring my own USB stick?

^ no you cant the stick has the technology to support the connection. That is a great deal. During the floods I used AIS and it sucked. 2700 for the stick and then in 20 hour increments down in Pattaya. Use it for 3 and get billed for 15.

    Good piece of advice.

Thank you, think I know now what to to - and looks "strong" enough to handle Skype so I can see my wife when I'm in Denmark (and of course she can see me) again and every day ;-)

Maybe not, mine even on a good day had problems with the video not fast enough. But voice was always clear. Sorry to disappoint you, but you said it was in the middle of nowhere.

just reading on Internet in Thailand - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

so maybe the CDMA option is not so good

HSPA when is does get here all over is the better idea

3G CDMA networks with speeds up to 3.1 Mbit/s are available in 51 provinces nationwide. These networks are scheduled to be switched to HSPA+ in the middle of 2012.
though things happening on schedure here are rare

I carry a Huawei E1762 ( HSUPA USB modem ) that is a couple of years old and have used that with 199 baht sim cards ( 1.2 gig of data within 45 days ) in metro BKK - but now I just use my samsung SGS2 as a mobile hotspot ( 149 baht - 50 hours - 30 days - but make sure to turn off data when not using )

out in the country you are limited to EDGE ( 384 kbits max ) most of the time , but in the bigger cities it gets HSUPA speeds ( I say this as is is better upload than HSDPA so must be on HSUPA - but no where near full speed )

I had a CAT Huawei EC150 CDMA 1.x EVDO for about a year before it failed - the reasons might not have been related to component failure because of wear and tear as it was not in my possession when I was not in country so I cannot vouch for its treatment the whole time - some other members are still using the CAT CDMA network who think it is worth it ( Norton )

bottom line is looking to the future , think HSPA and LTE for wireless connection ( jfgi - just fcukin google it )
If you torture data for enough time , you can get it to say what you want.

For the location of the original poster you can forget about the above for another 5 or 6 years.

    He needs one of these:

    CAT CDMA

I've used CDMA up that way, Sakorn Nakhorn / Sawang Din Darng and it works fine.

790 baht plus vat a month, unlimited.

I discovered while in Bangers that AIS will give you 3G, with 3Gb cap, valid for a month, if you whack 800 baht of credit on a pay-as-you-go.

Ideal if like me you want the internet all the time and you aren't there long enough to get a contract.
The next post may be brought to you by my little bitch Spamdreth
