You are a few miles off base here dude.
A English Bull Terrier or just Bull Terrier is a long way from a Staffordshire terrier or American Staffordshire terrier. as those terriers are pit dogs, the Bull Terrier that Patton had in the movie was the true Bull Terrier even tho it did embarrass him when it ran fro a min. poodle.
Mine never backed down from a fight, he would rather play, but if a dog made a pass at my family then SUDS was there to meet him head on.
Even tho they are not pit dogs they are strong and tenacious and have to know just who the fuck is boss. I have never had any trouble with Rotts or Doberman either but I leave no doubt as to my place in the hierarchy of the pack, just as with horses or cattle, all animals need to know these things.

Just the thought of having one of them in the same room as my child turns my stomach.

I don't see myself owning a dog for over a decades time, all my favourite breeds are not excatly child friendly.

Fair play for giving the dog up, it certianly needs the correct upbringing.

^Bull Terrier or English Bull Terrier

    ^ Pit Bull Terrier

    ^Staffordshire Bull Terrier

    ^American Staffordshire terrier

There is a difference between all of these, when someone says pit bull terrier then they mean pit bull terrier, there is only one pit bull terrier, a Staffordshire terrier is not a pit bull terrier, an English bull terrier is not a pit bull terrier.

I don't think any dog should be left alone with children, there's too many things that kids can do to that can make the dog act instinctively and attack. Some are better than others, but the idea that there are 'safe' breeds is dangerous.
