    Korea 2006

i don't see permission to post anything about Korea here, yet i see China and Japan here. Has someone forgotten about dear Korea? anyway, as i was in the area, i thought i should go to korea and have a gander. i went there mainly to see the filming locations of a well known korean drama called 'jewel in the palace' [Dae Jang Geum]

    1st day in Korea.

changing of the guard, period style

    Jedu Island

Dae JangGuem was filmed here, as well as other period drama's

    clean streets

    North gate

    floating stone cap Buddha

    nice garden eh

its a lava cave on Jedu Island

these kids have no quarms about knocking them over. a Buddha's theroy about the universe and religious idea's

Gwangchoksa the Buddha from the future

Dae Jang Guem Theme park. the kitchen

seen 'Emperor of the sea'? location of the 'dock'

i have to hunt around in my cd collection for any more Korean photo's

    Cheers matey

here's a few more which i found last night.

i have no idea what this is. tasted like mash potato and sweet n sour. tasted rank though, but i had to eat something

never been on a film set before. Hong Gil Dong

    making Korean rice wine

    colourful lanterns

    now thats how to advertise!

my room for the night for £5. least the floor was heated

    protected tree???

went for a beer and expected nuts to snack on, not silkworm.

everywhere i went, there was always busloads of teenagers always too eager to pose in a photo

My fav korean food. Bibimbap. the side dishes are free i suppose cos as soon as the kimchi was gone, it was replaced. Of course, this didnt happen when i found a korean resturant in London and expected the same treatment. the chilli sauce was like tomato and no side dishes 'free'.

Wujou, thanks for the pics as they bring back memories of the 17 years during multiple assignment there since 1972 that IK lived and worked. Most recently 8 years from 1998 to Nov 2006. For your photo archiving purposes, if you need any assistance with local identification let me know as the location of your pics most seem familiar to me. Nice pics. Ciao!

Hey, your pics are really good. I am currently teaching in Korea, and recognize most of those places. How long are you in Korea for?

It sure looks like you have been around to many places in Seoul and outside of Seoul as well. I recognize Bulguska temple (Gyeongju), Hwaseong Fortress Wall (Suwon), Gyeongbukong Palace (Seoul).

How long are they filming for? Did you try the silkworm? (gross eh)

i explained how long i was in Korea in the post above yours. And it was 2006 i was there, not still there.

yea i had the silkworm, tasted rank though so i'm glad i had a beer to wash it down with.

glad to see you recognise some of the places in Korea. i was in Suwon on a day trip and walked all around the wall. i met some local men who were getting pissed on korean vodka. they even beckoned me over, but i declined with a smile and a wave.

South Korea was my first exposure to SE Asia, company I worked for at the time offered me the opportunity to work on a project in Pohang back in 1988. Back then as a young skint 24 year old married with twin daughters I jumped at the opportunity and have never looked back.

It was during my time on that project when a co-worker introduced me to Thailand, even back then he was living in BKK and married to a Thai lady, and he realised how unhappy I was with married life back in farangland and convinced me to "Cash In" my RnR tickets and spend time in Thailand with him instead. Twenty Two years down the line I am still in SE Asia, I never did make it back to UK, and the "Co-Worker" is still here and I refer to him as Uncle.

I have worked in Korea again in the past few years, Ulsan (Hyundai Ship Yards) in 2005 and Seoul (Samsung Engineering Head Office) 2008 but it was not the same as my first time there. I cannot put my finger on whether Korea has changed or I have become "Asianised" in retrospect it is probably a bit of both, but Korea will always have a special place in my heart as the first Asian country I lived in and the stepping stone to finding Thailand/

I wouldn't call Korea being in SE Asia. E Asia of course but not SE Asia.

Familiarity with Ulsan and the Industrial area in Kumi as well as most of the other parts of the peninsula. Changes there since 1972 have been tremendous and for the better for the country as a whole. Too bad the mentality of the people can not change for the better. More than 17 years resident in Korea and I do miss the cousine. Nang Myun (cold rice noodles) in the summer and Taegutong (spicy fish soup) in the winter and then of course they have all the other great tasting Kor foods.
