    China Picture thread.

In response to LTs very nice but entirely tourist point of view thread I thought I'd post some pics of the real China.
These are tken on Saturday in my neighbourhood on a short walkabout.
my son was ill so it was a short walk but this'll give you an idea.
I hope to continue this thread with pics from other areas as time goes by.
Leaving the apartment, walking down the driveway.
The vast majority live in apartments, only farmers and the filthy rich live in detached houses on land..
t think the idea of having to work on the lawns gardens etc would put them off.
Contrary to popular belief they are the laziest fuckers I've ever come across.
If it doesn't involve money, it's too much effort (generally, of course)

This guy sits at the entrance selling ducks feet, geese feet (no chicken feet for some reason) spicy ducks tongues etc. from his Chinese ute.

    Lets go left.

There's a park on the corner.

Who's the boss? (sorry, couldn't resist)

Lets take a shortcut through the park

    To the shopping centre

^Nice looking neighborhood! Interesting. China is just about the only place in Asia I have never been. Look forward to more.

    Another China Picture thread.

For some reason, no matter what I do I cannot open the other one to add pics. Could a Mod merge if it's not too much trouble., Thanks.

The local shopping centre/mall. About 10 minutes walk.

out the back of the shopping centre.

    A fairly big seafood restaurant.

    The live bar, an institution.

Hungry, gearing up for dinner time.

    Just some random street shots.

    Shoe mender.
The little girl will just be watching the shop for mum or dad.
These people do an unbelieveble job and can mend shoes you would think were beyond it for next to nothing.
They do such a good job for so little my wife always pays them double bless her heart.

Herbal tea on sale outside the Pharmacist.

    Making some kind of omelet,

Haircut, hairwash or massage (not the happy ending Kind)

Muslim BBQ. GREAT lamb kabobs, lamb shanks and bread (among other things except anything pork.)

Same place, hand made Xin Jiang (muslim) noodles.
A hearty winter dish, delicious but not for me in summer.

Guilin Noodles, a delicious noodle soup with pickled cabbage and peanuts.

    Phone shop.

Often go here for Yum Cha.

    Some random shots.

The Holiday Inn. my neighbour is the food and beverage manager here. An Indian guy, we get invited to some Indian do's, You think you've had indian food untill you eat with these guys, all trying to outdo each other with the food.

That all for today, I'll keep posting the real China you see on the street as I get time and pics.

I was thinking that. They've come a hell of a long way since Mao Tse Tung turned up his toes. Wonder what he would make of it all ?

You can tell a lot more about a place from pictures of day to day life than looking at the great wall or the forbidden city.

Where were the pictures taken ? Or did I miss something ?

Don't know what city this is but it sure as hell looks better than anywhere I lived in the early '90s..

Ask your Indian F&B Manager if he was the chef in the Beijing Holiday Inn '91 to '93... I might know him...

Thank you for an interesting post. I've been wanting to visit China but have a few questions; How difficult was it to get a visa? I've heard there are problems if you want a China visa and you are not in your home country, is that true? (I'm American living in Thailand)

The pics were taken in Zhuhai, Guandong.
We're on the border of Macau and across the bay from Hong kong.
It is between 5 and 6pm on Saturday evening. It had been a hot (35deg) day.

^^ I got a visa in Thailand and it took me about 3 days. Don't know about the cost as I didn't pay for it but I doubt it is that much

If you have a work permit add that too your list of visa application documents and Bob's ya uncle.

By the way nice thread Dug and I look forward to seeing more piccies.

Guess that depends on your comfort zone. The only 'civilised' regions of China are away from the mega-cities.

    How far away?
To where there's no streetlighting? No paving?
    No public facilities whatsoever?
I don't think you have any idea, you're one of these hippy types that thinks the oriental wisdom and ancient ways of mystical China blah blah blah fucking bullshit.

And re-reading that is makes no sense whatsoever. Are you suggesting that to get away from the mega cities one needs to go north?

Here are a few random pics from the album.

This is a restaurant on anisland reached by bridge.
That deck is a VERY nice place to enjoy a beer and some prawns and fish and a sea breeze on a sunny day

A restaurant on the way home

    Here are some interesting ones.
My wifes Uncles wife comes from a village that is on the outskirts of, amd being absorbed by, Shenzhen.
here you have Ye Olde village and the new suburbs in one place, including the original village well still in use.
The uncle and his mates are doing very well out of all this thank you very much.

On the other hand, closer to town.

This is where we sometimes have lunch.
    Sometimes lunch runs long.

A kind of beach hut restaurant on the rocks.

i had a problem in hanoi, vietnam as did another farang in the queue. trying to get a working visa . they said something about going back to own country and applying. like talking to a robot with a growl . am sure she was nice after work though.
ended up having it done in vientien, laos with exactly the same papers.
    why ,i don't know.
tourist visa should be less of a problem.
