Dunno- was just taking a stroll to the Shangri-La for an afternoon drink and spotted a train in the distance and wanted the hazy shot. Might head out to the train station tomorrow to be an anorak. UB can be hard to love, but I get to live in a country most folks will never visit, nevermind live in, so it's all good.

I suspect many, prior to moving there would do due diligence and hence after investigating and noting the environmental problems, would scratch it from any bucket list, to visit let alone move there.

A bit unsettling that the usual view from the bedroom window has just vanished- can't see the mountains at all. Those lung pics are pretty sobering stuff, OhOh. I would be interested to know how many years it took? If it's two years I'm stuffed 555. This was never going to be a long-term posting 2 years I saving over 2/3s of my salary every month and I am headed back to Thailand.

Luke warm water is no fun at all when it is -stupid outside.
Aside from grading, I need to sort out my New Year plans- got 1st-16th Jan off.
Could fly to BKK, but it is about $1000+- I'd rather have more time in Thailand for that price so may leave it until I have 2.5 months of for summer.
An in country holiday is possible, but the weather shuts down quite a few of the normal tourist activities.
Have a staycation- boring and there is the toxic cloud to consider
    Go to South Korea

I'd be off to Thailand faster than a rat up a drainpipe.

Two weeks is plenty and you will have earned it.

The price is the way it is.

^^ are you fucking nuts ?

Neglecting your health staying there on your jollies to scrape as much dough as you can is fucking stupid.

From 800 usd Bangkok return on skyscanner, although that one has a bit of a stopover.

You'll be crying in January if you dont book, best time of the year to visit Thailand too and the worst time of year to be in Ulanbataar

You should come back in January to see it at its worst – when people living in these poor neighbourhoods don’t have anywhere to dispose of the ash and leave it in the streets. The ash flies with the wind. That’s when Ulaanbaatar turns into a massive ashtray.”

12 Days of lung recovery booked- went with a direct flight with MIAT in the end, 1000 quid is expensive, so decided I may as well upgrade for 150 quid- which is a bargain. MIATs price structure is rather odd in that sense.

Did ask about travel in Mongolia in winter, none of the local teachers recommended it- the areas I wanted to visit have no paved roads, not a problem in spring and summer, but not safe during the winter months- my plans will have to wait for the thaw and it will just make it a stopover on the trans Siberian plan as it is pretty close to the Russian border.

For now, the idea of a swimming pool, hot temperatures and real Thai food will get me through the coming months. Still, no reason not to hike and visit a nearby national park until then.

You bought the winter boots, the winter coat, but have you got all the protection you need Mandy? Perhaps this "device"?

Alarmingly I found out today that it gets so cold in Jan/Feb that the horns of livestock fall off. That cock sock is not a bad idea!

I like it how no is the first choice, now that is a smart phone.
It may be - silly outside but the common room is a balmy 35 degrees, thanks to soviet era heating being rather more effective than anticipated.

Mentally counting down to Thailand already

That's stupid hot if it's adjustable. No wonder there's so much smog from burning heating fuel.
Added stupid is that that sort of heat really de-acclimates one from the pervading cold elsewhere.

It's not, and all the heating plants are powered by coal, which just adds to the haze in further. Ironically enough in this cold weather my fridge couldn't hack the heat of my apartment and has given up the ghost.

So, hang a basket out the window?....No, that wouldn't work because you'd have frozen milk .
Sounds like a very ironical situation; inside too hot and outside too cold.
Put it down to a life experience and enjoy. Something to tell the grandkids.

The old Soviet boiler has 2 settings full blast or broken, you'll be glad it of it when you return to minus 30 after lus 30 in the flashpots of Bangkok.

Hint to all nice young men, avoid strip poker with a group met over a hand shandy at On Nut, you could end with a very sore bottom on Jomtien beach to be discovered by Danny Dilly or Boytoy oh and the lingleader Lurcio

Nice sunrise this morning on the way to work

Also, -14 feels warm compared to -17- adjusting!
