A contract of employment, in any country is a legal document. Spending your own cash upfront isn't a normal requirement. All views should be aired and expectations understood and agreed by both parties.

    In any industry.

There are times that one accepts a position on a nod and a wink, To move countries and expend your own monies on one is idiotic. But you'll tell me education is so civil.

    This experience suggests otherwise.

    Mongolia: yay or nay?
This one is genuinely certified-not PYP, a bit of a shame that.
Has anyone been to Ulan Bator for work or just to visit?

Despite my time in China being short, I'd still recommend as a place to visit - wonderful people; don't believe all that racist shite you read on Thai Visa Et al.

^ I'm going on the neighbourhood I lived in admittedly- mostly middle-class families and monied salarymen. They were more outgoing than my Myanmar neighbours and kept the place tidier in general. I saw spitting about 10 times, it's being discouraged in cities as a health hazard and the younger generation are paying heed for the most part. Oddly enough the only time I was shoved out the way was leaving China last night.

Food was excellent- fatty lamb skewers need to come to BKK!
I got shafted by one school in a country of billions of people; I'm certainly not going to hold a grudge because of that- it would be beyond petty to do so imo

Will be back in BKK for a bit, looking forward to a cold Leo and putting it behind me. Seething and raging about it is going to accomplish nothing- I know myself well enough to know that I would have blown a gasket under such working conditions in the long run.

Sorry to hear about your China mis-adventure, Mandy. Some ppl here may question your decision(s) re: the past few days, but hey, it's your life & you learn from your mistakes. Fortunately, you're young enough to get up & recover.

Re: Ulan Bataar & Mongolia, I've never been there but I tour-guided a group of young Mongolians (prolly late 20s to early 30s, 10 of them) early this year. One of the group is an FB friend - she's the friend of a friend. My impression of the group was good - they were very nice, polite, kind hearted.

They are professional drinkers, even the women! During that day, we passed by a fruit & lambanog store (on the way to Tagaytay), and the group bought 2 large bottles. My friend (a Filipino, the direct contact of this Mongolian girl) - we tried to warn them about the high alcohol content of the lambanog (coconut wine). She said, don't worry, they are professional drinkers! 555

The ppl are generally taller than SEAsians - both men & women. One girl, who was my height, said that she liked it in PI because she felt tall here, as there were many girls shorter than her. The women have very fair skin, and generally had small boobs & butt. (The girls commented to me about that - girl talk, 55).

My friend who worked as an expat in UB said that it's a small city - much smaller than Metro Manila (or Bangkok). There are also only few people - only 3 million or so population - they have more livestock.

One of the guys in that group has been to the Gobi desert. He said it was a real challenge climbing the sand dunes. One of his companions during the climb gave up climbing & just rested on the slopes. He showed me his pics from his phone.

If you do go to UB, you may send me a PM and I can get you in touch with my friend. She speaks English well since she works for a multinational company and is at mid management level. Most of the ppl in that group could speak English. They gave me an open invite to visit UB and they'll tour me around.

I've no knowledge of the educational system there, so good luck re: that. Have read an article on BBC re: Mongolian women - Nov or Dec 2017. I remember having read it before the Mongolian group came in January. They have these famous horse race in the countryside - it's a big event.

I suggest you do more investigations than just here and video clips. Are you finding these opportunities from agencies, if so they may have responsibilities and obligations to protect you from abuse.

The ISS does have some great views and many visitors from other galaxies. Try and get on one of the supply trips or visit in one of the Spacex cars.

Watched the video posted by Norton, thanks for that. The expats mentioned mining in Mongolia. Re: mining, the Mongolians I talked to said that water supply is an issue in their country. Since their country is landlocked and very dry, they are worried about water supply running out because much of it is being used now in mining.

Re: the people, my friend said that they are very warm & accommodating. He worked as an expat there for ~6 months. The men & women - they eat & drink a lot. He also said that the food was mainly bland.

Most of the group that I toured were slim, only 1 was chubby. However my friend said that like most ppl, they gained weight as they aged or had kids. Most of them have traveled abroad. One of them (a girl) studied for her master's in the US on assistanceship. The other 3 were studying for their MS degrees in China and took a one week holiday in PI. They stayed in budget hotels or Air bnb. Most were very curious about the country and they liked tasting the tropical fruits. All of them loved mangoes - mangoes are so pricey there since they have to import.

Their language sounds more Russian than Mandarin or Cantonese - lots of consonants. Some of them have names which are hard to pronounce & remember, because of the consonants, so they just adapt English names.

They also told me the reason why they have so few people in their country, but that's another story.

Re: Bettyboo and Mongolia, I remember that he posted pics of his Mongolian GF. Wonder if they're still around. Heh...

Got offers from Yangon and Mongolia so far and an interview with a school in Kurdistan later this afternoon. Yangon is the same school I worked for in Mandalay, just in a different city. Mongolia has a nicer accommodation package in so far as I don't have to share. I have some concerns about winter- it gets unfathomably cold -20 to -45, I have never experienced anything below -5 lol

^^Got busy with work. Only now that I have a break & able to browse TD. Didn't tell the story earlier since my time was limited and I don't know if ppl would be interested.

From what I've heard, it does get really cold in Mongolia. My friend had to buy lots of winter gear when he stayed there. My friend and the Mongolian girl who was the "head of the party" - they worked for the same multinational company and kept in touch via FB.

The Mongolian group arrived here (in PI) in January. At that time, it was still cool, temps were ~24 to 26 Celsius. My friend and I wore jeans (and sometimes jacket) as we toured them around. The Mongolians wore shorts and sleeveless shirts! 55

Re: the low population number, according to them, at some point in their history, they were at war with the Chinese, who wanted to rule over them. Then the Russians came to their aid and drove the Chinese out. The Russians also brought communism (or socialism, whatever). Then during that time, the gov't put (placed? levied?) high income tax. The income earners were mostly men at that time. However, monks were exempt from income tax. So many men, to avoid being taxed, became monks. Then (I think) they were not allowed to leave the monkhood. They were also not allowed to have their own families/ children. So only few men were reproducing at that time. They also don't have many children due to the harsh conditions, especially in the countryside.

They (the Mongolians) did say that they have more livestock than people! I found it a bit odd, since there are 100+ million Filipinos in my small country (10 M working overseas). But then, most are Catholics and don't practice birth control. But again, that's another story...

You know China has a kind of sub tropical south don't you?
By the way, no way you had to pay 6 months up front for an apartment. First and last month just like in the west.

I hope you're not suggesting that Mandy was taken advantage of by renters in league with school admin...such behavior would further suggest...well, never mind: the folks he met were always friendly and helpful...
