The iconic "Honey Bee" ... feeding drunk Sailors for 50 plus years and last stop before entering the gate

Place the US and Japanese Navy bubbas get their command patches made.

Need a special ID to use the cigarette machine. Obtainable at most convenience stores.

Lawsons no longer exist in the states as far as I know.

The obligatory Thai restaurant. The also sell cooking ingredients to customers ... meaning local Thai wives mostly.

I was medevaced from Manila to Yokusaka Naval Hospital in 1991 for sinus surgery. After recovering a bit, but with a few days to kill before I could fly, I wandered around the town. Ran across a street of bars - I have never, before or since, seen signs at either end of a street full of bars that read "No Whites".

I was there when Nixon mined Haiphong Harbor and the riots outside the gate of the Naval Station were something to behold. We all had to go on Liberty wearing civvies.

Yeah, the houses you get through the agencies off base jack the prices. The agency, owner and base are all in on it. Sailors and stateside hire civilians don't care though since Uncle Sam picks up the tab.

Yep, they still exist and did even when I first came here in 1979. What that really means is "No Gaijin" ... and what's really behind it is money. Japanese pay big money in those bars to flirt with girls and get nothing. Sailors want to buy one drink and then think its rates them a blow job. Well heeled gaijin and Sailors who speak Japanese can get into those places.

I think that's what you are referring to ... "No Gaijin".

^Nope. What I'm talking about is bars with groups of black servicemen and local whores hanging around outside with soul music blaring out of the bars.

Those buy me drink girls were already almost died out by the my first time here in 1979. The ones still left back then were old.

Tom Popos the old blow job bar is gone probably 30 years. The very last whore house "Running Water" was gone by 1995.

There are still some bars with Filipina hostesses ... I think. But it takes a lot of visits and drinks before those gals sleep with anybody.

It's not the same old raucous place the old school Vietnam Vets remember.

Oh, OK ... One of those places might be the Soul Embassy in one of the pics above. You have me interested now and I'll have to ask around. I'll be shocked if there are any bars left where i can't go in. If so it would off limits.

Here's a big game changer you all got to remember when it comes to bars outside the base ... Ships and Sailors come and go. But ever since 2007/2008 when the nuke carrier got here the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard civilian yardbirds rule the bars from December to May every year ... It never changes. 600-800 of them come over here to work on the carrier and they take up all the hotel rooms on The Honch and they infest all the bars night after night.

Don't normally obey signs, so I wandered down this small almost side street for a ways. Got a lot of nasty looks from Bro's and Ho's alike, but no comments. Since I had just had surgery, I was in no shape for an altercation, so I headed off to the tiny little hotel. I had been allowed a room in the BOQ for two days following surgery (slept all of it) but they then booted me out and I had to find a local joint until I could fly again.

Prefer the FRA when the need hits me for a beer or a bourbon. It's much bigger.

There is an area over by Chuo Station that is the same sort of deal. A maze of bars on small streets and it's pretty much Japanese only run by the Yakuza. They don't want us over there ... The people I Know who do go are old buggers like me who have been here for years and first were taken there by Japanese friends.

Wherever I was was no more than a 15 or 20 minute slow walk from the Base. I think I turned right out of the gate and walked towards the little guest house, passing a shopping mall on my right. The little bar streets were on the left side of the main drag. 1991 mind you. There were a bunch of little shops among the bars selling GI crap.
