    Visiting Tibet

Isn’t going to happen any time soon.: China Forbids International Tourism to Tibet Indefinitely - ABC News

In a matter of days, the number of expected foreign visitors to Tibet has gone from millions to zero.

We had planned a visit to China in the upcoming months and were going to stay for about a month with Tibet/Lhasa being one of our destinations (for about 6 days via the train ride from North to South over the Tibetan Plain).

I understood there was a certain time of the year when the Chinese would close off Tibet to foreigners and we planned accordingly. Then the Chinese government started to restrict issuing permits to 5 person same nationality to visit the area this year. We (our agent) might have been able to work around that restriction.

I was so looking forward to trying to sneak a picture of the Sky Burial Master at work.

We have spent some time in China before and have visited some of the major tourist destinations and hope to visit again if we can find an alternative to Tibet.

Just a warning for anyone planning to visit Tibet. Plan ahead. Damn Chinese government can fuck up a wet dream.
Keep your friends close and your enemies closer.

This is really, really bad news. It means the Chinese are getting ready to do even worse than they have already.

Moronic comment of the day from ENT. Using a thread like this to try and rile me is utterly inappropriate.
Have a bit of respect for the Tibetan people and keep your shit out of this thread.

What are you on about here, weasel?
"Using a thread like this to try and rile me is utterly inappropriate. "

    Feeling "holier than though" again?
You show some respect for a change, to the Thai hosts you denigrate.

China closes its borders about this time of year every year, coinciding with Tibetan celebrations and festivals.

Repressing the Tibetans is just not on, but your country OZ, hasn't got much of a credit rating when it comes to repressing Aboriginal rights.

When's the next Aboriginal tent embassy gonna be destroyed or closed down by the Ockers?

Gonna say, "This is really, really bad news." about that?

I'm talking about a personal issue, which you are airing on this thread. At the very least it is inappropriate.
And I do not represent the Oz government or it's policies, stupid.

The monsoons have hit the north India in the last few weeks making travel from Nepal,Sikhim and N India to China difficult, landslides abound.
Many tourists like to go at this north hemisphere summer, (average temp. @ 20 C).
The safer travel time through the Himalayas are during the Autumn and Spring months, no snow or rain to contend with.

A great way of visiting Tibet is via India then Sikhim.
I think the best time is September-October/November.

From anywhere in India, fly to Bagdograh, then Jeep to Siliguri.
Get the Toy Train from Siliguri to Darjeeling. Do spend time there, it's a crazy old town, the heart of Ghorkaland.

From Darjeeling Jeep to Gangtok in Sikhim. Awe inspiring mountains descending to Tista river then up to Gangtok.
You can get an Inner Line entry permit/transit visa (15 days) at the border at Rangpo, Sikhim.
    Takes 10 mins.

Or you can get a Sikhim visa (6 mths.)or Inner Line Permit/transit permit at the Govt Office Darjeeling, takes about half an hour. Office situated 10 mins walk downhill from Planters' Club, or Keventers etc.

Or, get your China visa in Gangtok, or prior to that at any Chinese Embassy/consulate in India.
Spend time in Sikhim, the local Lepcha folk are very hospitable, as are the Ghorkali of Darjeeling.
From Gangtok, Jeep via Nathula Pass to Giangtse, at the Tibet border.
    Proceed to Lhasa.

Or fly from Bagdogra to Gangtok, getting all your permits in Kolkata or Delhi.
I think the overland from Siliguri is the best value for money and time.

It is bad news for travelers and the people of Tibet also. We decided we’re still going to do China but if need be alter our plans to Tibet.

I don’t know where he was when he learned the news but I would have been upset if I was standing at the train station getting ready to board the train and some Chinese government official tell me to go back home.

September was the month we were supposed to visit and getting there was part of the attraction/adventure (even though your suggestion sounds nice). We were scheduled to take the train (30 pus hours on the highest railway in the world) from the north side of the Tibetan Plateau to the south side/Lhasa.

Maybe it’s just a matter of time and the government might lift the restrictions. Thanks everyone for the input, even if some of you are bickering.

According to friends in Ghorkaland today, the Chinese will open the border and start issuing permits for the TAR again in September.
This closure is on top of the usual seasonal closures around March. It's a knee-jerk reaction to recent self immolations in Lhasa.

    Tibet Travel Update June 2012
    POSTED BY LOSANG བློ་བཟང་ | MAY 11, 2012

    UPDATED June 8, 2012
This year has been a difficult year so far for those wanting to travel to Tibet, including the regions of Amdo and Kham. All areas were closed during March and some areas in Kham didn’t reopen until late April/early May. Here is the latest update on travel regulations and closures across the Tibetan Plateau (NB: This information is current at the time of writing. It is important to remember that travel regulations can and do change all the time without any warning).

Lhasa and the Tibet Autonomous Region
UPDATE: Lhasa and the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) are currently closed to all foreign travelers. This is directly related to the recent self-immolations that took place in Lhasa. It is difficult to say exactly how long this closure will last. Early rumors suggest this closure could last until late August, but again, it is far too early to say for certain at this point. It is impossible to predict if there will be further protests, uprisings or immolations in the area so it is impossible to say when things will reopen.

Many people have asked me for an “official” statement from the Chinese government regarding the closure of the TAR. Since Tibet is an extremely sensitive political area, the government is NOT going to give an official statement on the closure. In fact, if you were to talk to the Tibet Tourism Bureau they will probably tell you that Tibet is open and has always been open for the past 30 years! They most likely would deny it has ever closed since the region opened to foreigners in 1980. That is why I maintain this site…to give travelers updates on the current travel restrictions across the Tibetan Plateau.

Here are a few links from recent news articles that have covered the recent closure of Tibet. Again, these are not official news articles from the Chinese government:
    Yahoo: Tibet Closed to Foreigners
    Sinchew News: Tibet Closed
    NY Times: Tibet Closed
UK Telegraph: Tibet Closes to Foreigners

Lhasa and the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) was closed this year from late February until early April to all foreign travelers. When the area reopened, the Tibet Tourism Bureau required all foreigners to travel in a small group of at least 4 or 5 people and all the people had to be from the same country. There were a lot of rumors out of Lhasa that this rule would be relaxed in early May and that travel regulations would return to normal, which would allow solo travelers as well as those in groups of mixed nationalities to apply for travel permits. However, these strict rules are still in effect.

Currently all foreigners traveling to Lhasa or anywhere else in the TAR are required to be in a group of at least 4 or 5 people and all the people have to have the same nationality. There are no exceptions to this. Very few times in the past 10 years has the government enforced the strict “group travel” requirement. I am hoping that this rule is lifted soon, but it is impossible to say when it will happen or if it will happen at all this year.

Chamdo prefecture in the far eastern portion of the TAR remains permanently closed to foreign travelers. It has been closed since March 2010. The overland routes from Sichuan and Yunnan provinces, which must pass through Chamdo prefecture along the way to Lhasa, also remain closed to foreign travelers

More on each district of the TAR.

    good news,..........

WildChina wanted to share that earlier today we received word that local authorities have begun issuing permits for foreign travelers again. Foreign travelers are now able to secure the necessary visa that will enable them to enter Tibet, and we in fact have clients in Lhasa at the moment. WildChina is very pleased with this news as Tibet in the summer is absolutely stunning. We have many clients who have bespoke tours planned through us this summer and look forward to welcoming them to this diverse and culturally rich region. WildChina will continue to track the situation on the WildChina blog: WildChina Blog

hope they keep it open and if we can get in we'll post some pictures

Maybe that's just a one off tourist co. promo. as no news yet of "normal" issuing of permits.

This is exactly what the Chinese government hopes will happen. You should instead find alternatives to China.
