Hey guys and gals, got friends coming for a quick visit (1st time Chiang Mai) who have expressed a great deal of interest in white water rafting.
Does anyone know if such a thing exists in Chiang Mai? its not really my thing so therefore know nothing, any help would be great, thanks

After the recent flooding up North, there would be a good flow of water, I imagine. Anyone live near these rivers ?

Well the Ping was extremely high last week.

During very high flows the rafts walk around the 3km section with the mosts rapids. At lower flows they will run the whole thing. The Mae Taeng is a dangerous river and people die on it every year, it is worth choosing a reputable rafting company rather than the cheapest you can find for that reason.

EDIT: I didn't mean that to put people off, all activities such as rafting have an inherent risk, some rivers more than others. The Mae Taeng is safe to raft if you are with a rafting company who know what they are doing and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend friends to go and do it. Anyhow, I think at this time of year none of the rafting companies will be running the hard bit.

I am simply suggesting to use a reputable rafting company (as in your video) which actually sets up safety people on the banks, use trained raft guides who understand the river and have some first aid and rescue training etc..

Would you get on a bus if you knew the driver was unable to drive and had only been dragged out of a hill tribe village a day earlier? The same applies to rafting!

as far as I know, nobody has ever died rafting on that river

so if you didn't make it up, you have believed an unreliable source

The last two I heard about were a Thai tourist who fell in on the second rapid and another guy who wasn't rafting but got swept down the river. Both got trapped in a syphon (which is an underwater cave), the Mae Taeng has quite a few of these, which makes it more dangerous than some other rivers.

There was also a raft which entered the gorge downstream from the commercially rafted section. Only two people survived out of six as the section they went down is extremely difficult, dangerous and completely unsuitable for rafts.

as for Mae Taeng, I have a cabin right on the river, near the rafting area

I have rafted many times, both there and elsewhere, and have talked to many of the operators and guides. Never has it been mentioned that people have died, never mind every year!!
