yes, I have done it up near Mae Tang

really nice river; I should think at this time of year it could be quite exciting!

    just google

white water rafting mae taeng river
    and lots of info

you can do it through loads of tour operators, just find the best price ( I have seen B1200 to B1800 for the same stretch of water)

    even a video

After the recent flooding up North, there would be a good flow of water, I imagine. Anyone live near these rivers ?

During very high flows the rafts walk around the 3km section with the mosts rapids. At lower flows they will run the whole thing. The Mae Taeng is a dangerous river and people die on it every year, it is worth choosing a reputable rafting company rather than the cheapest you can find for that reason.

EDIT: I didn't mean that to put people off, all activities such as rafting have an inherent risk, some rivers more than others. The Mae Taeng is safe to raft if you are with a rafting company who know what they are doing and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend friends to go and do it. Anyhow, I think at this time of year none of the rafting companies will be running the hard bit.

Adventure of river rafting along the Mae Taeng River follows strict safety precautions and is known for having a commendable safety record

What a strange response, why would I make it up?

I am simply suggesting to use a reputable rafting company (as in your video) which actually sets up safety people on the banks, use trained raft guides who understand the river and have some first aid and rescue training etc..

Would you get on a bus if you knew the driver was unable to drive and had only been dragged out of a hill tribe village a day earlier? The same applies to rafting!

Then one would assume you'd be able to corroborate it.

as far as I know, nobody has ever died rafting on that river

so if you didn't make it up, you have believed an unreliable source

let us know about this first-hand information; usually if people die every year there would be some quotable facts

Well you aren't helpoing him by giving him inaccurate misinformation.

When did you hear of a farang dying on a White Water rafting trip on that river?

The guy wanted to know where he could take someone whitewater rafting

you came up with a nonsense scare story that you cannot back up

    very helpful

I have rafted down that river several times, in different water flows, I have spoken to lots of the local guides and guesthouse owners. Not one has ever mentioned any serious accident, never mind a death

If deaths happened every year, then it would be big news

the main consequence to you is that you have been shown up to be a liar without any conscience

The last two I heard about were a Thai tourist who fell in on the second rapid and another guy who wasn't rafting but got swept down the river. Both got trapped in a syphon (which is an underwater cave), the Mae Taeng has quite a few of these, which makes it more dangerous than some other rivers.

There was also a raft which entered the gorge downstream from the commercially rafted section. Only two people survived out of six as the section they went down is extremely difficult, dangerous and completely unsuitable for rafts.

So Robbo, ignoring this irrelevant nonsense, just contact the Extreme Sports Cafe at the link I provided.

Everyone’s safety is our #1 concern, whether you are a first time rafting adventurer or a seasoned paddler. Everyone participating in a White water Rafting experience is given a rafting safety talk and drilled with proper paddling instructions, and then given international standard rafting equipment. Extreme Sports Café’s Whitewater Rafting Centre has International standards, English speaking, first aid and swiftwater rescue trained guides. All of this guarantees your safety.

The only irrelevant nonsense on here is the pair of you trying to turn this thread into some kind of argument. My first post was perfectly reasonable and true. However, you wouldn't know would you because you don't even live here, nevermind visit the Mae Taeng, know anything at all about whitewater rafting, personally know many of the guides as well as some of the rafting company owners.....

Like I said right from the very beginning. It is not dangerous if you go with a company who know what they are doing.

how strange that none of this was reported in any news media!!

tell us about this gorge downstream of the main rafting section

maybe you are confusing your rivers, or even the country?

we were trying to establish the truth in your assertions that people die every year on the river; you haven't actually corroborated your statement

as for Mae Taeng, I have a cabin right on the river, near the rafting area

I have rafted many times, both there and elsewhere, and have talked to many of the operators and guides. Never has it been mentioned that people have died, never mind every year!!

    just a link

Riding the Rapids with Rafting and Other Water Sports in Chiang Mai | My Chiang Mai Hotels

    a bit of it

Like all adventure sports, there is always an element of risk in rafting. However, the Chiang Mai Adventure of river rafting along the Mae Taeng River follows strict safety precautions and is known for having a commendable safety record. Serious accidents are extremely rare
no deaths mentioned, but there have been a broken bone or two

    and not every year!

the only time the river may be dangerous is after heavy rains; in those conditions, the rafting operators do not go out
