Loss of American Passport

Sumbody's been bitchin' about a lack of threads on this forum. And there isn't really any other forum where this OP is particularly relevant. Maybe that could be addressed with a new forum dedicated to Legal Affairs for Foreign Citizens.

Adult Lost/Stolen Passport Replacement (Ages 16+)

After making every attempt to recover the missing passport, please obtain a police report from the Thai Police station closest to where the event took place or from any Tourist Police station (Tourist Police Hotline: 1155).

To replace a passport, you must appear in person at the U.S. Embassy in Bangkok during regular office hours (7:30-11 AM and 1-2 PM)

Make an appointment. (Appointments are recommended but not required if you have an urgent need for a replacement passport and can show proof of imminent travel.)

Bring the following to the appointment:

• Forms DS-11 and DS-64. These are electronic forms that must be filled out and submitted online. NB: your lost or stolen passport will be invalidated as soon as you submit the first form. So be absolutely sure it's gone before submitting either form. However, you might be able to print copies that you haven't actually submitted. (I didn't suggest that)
• Original police report documenting the loss/theft
• A photocopy of your current U.S. passport, if available
• A valid photo ID, if available
• Passport photo (See link for detailed requirements; eye glasses are no longer permitted; an onsite photo booth is available for a fee of 150 THB.)
• Fee of $135, payable in cash (USD or THB) or by credit card

We will notify you by email when the new passport arrives, usually in about two weeks. If you would like us to mail the new passport to you, then you must prepay the postage for a Thai Post “Courier Pass Back Service” envelope at the Thai Post Office located on site.

If you have an urgent need for a replacement passport and can show proof of imminent travel, we may be able to issue you an “emergency passport” while you wait or within 24 hours. Please note that an emergency passport has a limited validity period of up to one year and may be replaced (free-of-charge) with a full-validity passport within that time.

After receiving the new passport, please take it to Thai Immigration (PDF 191KB) to transfer the Thai entry stamp/visa. Our office will provide you with a letter to facilitate the transfer.

Me mate had 2 lost or stolen, apparently his 3rd one was it. There is no 4th. Lose 3 and you don't get another one. He was murdered in Cambodia before he got to lose it anyway, so wasn't an issue.

Actually it's usual info. Luigi, what nationality was your mate?

For me, after reporting a 2nd British passport lost/stolen years ago I was then flagged on Thai immigration's database. Every time I departed or arrived at Don Muang airport I'd be sent into an office while they checked things out. One time nearly missed a flight because of it.

I actually found my 2nd passport that I thought I'd lost, some months later, and it took me a few trips to Suan Phlu to get them to remove my entry from their comps.

How current is this bulletin?

My niece was traveling with an American friend who lost her passport. She had a replacement issued at the Chiang Mai consulate. That was early last year.

Used to get offered big money in Hong kong for your passport, never did it myself but knew fellas who did.

This past week I had to report my address to Thai Immigration. I couldn't find my passport once I arrived there. After looking for it in the usual places I called the Chaig Mai consulate. The first thing I learned is that a loss or stolen passport is not considered an emergency. Therefore you follow the procedure for regular passport services which begins by making an appointment online. However when I logged on to do that there was a specific button for a replacement passport. I clicked that and it pulled up the web site I've referred to here.

Then when I filled out the first form online I found out that if I submitted it my old passport would be invalidated. I couldn't bring myself to report it lost or stolen when it hadn't been even one day since. Then I found it in an unusual place.

I don't think so. I can't find any reference online to a limit on the number of lost or stolen passports that you are allowed in a lifetime. However the normal duration of a US passport is 10 years. If there is a limit I would imagine it to be within that time frame.

Last night I did google Luigi - but after I asked the question.

It's not legal for the Yankistan gov the not issue a passport, but I assume if someone was suspected of lyin' or sellin' it could be made a shorter term or special passport.
