Just back from Chiang Mai and heard some stories of explosives going off a few days ago but there has been no mention in the news. How much is going on out there that we don't know about?

If it's the same as in my village it'll be the grape vine getting it wrong. As per usual.
^^I rather doubt that much can happen anywhere in the world at this point without it appearing on social media of one variety or another.
Gossip, the lifeline of rural Thai communication.......
Can be reported in local news which we are not reading.
Chiang Mai has it's share of turf wars on occasion, also. When they were putting in the hypermarkets, bombs in the parking lots were de rigueur. Crossed the local mafia they were not allowed in on the takings.

The point of controlling the media as the coup are doing is to control information, hide information, etc.
Certainly information has been repressed and falsely broadcast since day 1 of the coup. As Davis says, social media is an outlet and a communication source, so info does spread more quickly than in previous times, and you'd imagine that any major incidents would become known. But, arrests, intimidation, army activity, etc, is controlled by the junta as is the media, so who knows what is really going on? Certainly, lots is going on... The idea that the junta and theur TD buddies would like to portray that everything is calm and everybody is happy is plain ridiculous.

OK, Pragmatic, the junta are not controlling the media, the junta have not closed any media outlets (never mind hundreds...), the junta do not tell the main media what they can and cannot say, and the media notices that have been put up by outlets explaining the junta controls never happened either, the junta have not been arresting and detaining journalists, academics and politicians, the junta have not been closing down peaceful rallies against the coup, the junta have not been dragging old ladies off the street for holding up signs saying "we want elections", no red shirts have been arrested by the junta, the junta have not been replacing policemen, army and local politicians with their own politically aligned people, the junta have not put road blocks up, the junta have not been sending the army into towns and villages, the junta has not imposed any curfews or restrictions of any kind, and the junta are loved by everybody because they are good people who are solely interested in helping the nation...
You are of course, quite right. How silly of me to think otherwise...
Of course the western media and social media print 100% truth all the time so we a benchmark

Quite true, Nidhogg, but this thread is about things not reported in the media...
And the things I've listed have been about closing down the media space; a space which has shrunk massively since the day before the coup. Of course, the people who have been pointing this out, well respected political commentators, Thais with decades of experience, could learn quite a lot from the TD crew...
None of that shit has happened where I live. Life goes on as normal.Originally Posted by Bettyboo
The answer is plenty. That's the whole point of the media controls. You know it alls can talk all the crap you like, but the fact remains that media controls are in place for 2 reasons:Originally Posted by thailazer
1) repress the news
2) frame a dialog suitable for the junta
otherwise the media would be free and there would be no controls...
I want to know when the 33 local farrang radio stations in Pattaya will be back on. They have been replaced by navy news.
Barry Upton must be revolting.

It's an ugly thought mate - Betty likes fun stuff like goats and orange things and all that - no way it's serious.
