I have to go to chaing mai,chaing rai looking for orchids.

where are the best nurseries to go to?

Why go all the way to Chaing Mai? There are so many varieties here in Bangkok. The military near bases in town have places they sell from. Their soldiers have to go out into the jungle and bring back many lovely orchids to make some extra money. Try that. Plus the orchids from Chaing Mai will only do well in a cooler climate. Then you alway have JJ

in terms of environmental protection you shouldnt buy the things, that are just illegally taken from nature...

in the nursery the plants are not protected, but cultivated for garden etc...

On the Chiang Mai - Chiang Rai Road (Highway 118) about a third of the way, you'll come across an area where there are orchid sellers set up on the roadside, one after the other. you'll get a good variety there.

Plus the orchids from Chaing Mai will only do well in a cooler climate

That's only true for a very few species that grow only near the mountain tops and in thick unspoiled jungle... temperature, air moisture and the ever present breeze up there you can replicate, if need be. Most native Thai orchids will grow almost everywhere in Thailand but some might not flower properly.

In CM you will find a lot of native orchids at Kham Tien flower market, open every day and still a few sellers (the flowering season is almost over and they don't like to offer non-flowering plants) at the local markets, for instance on thursday afternoon at the market corner of roads nr. '1001' and '1260' (near Maejo University) and a day later near Mae Rim on the corner of the '107' and the '1260' (also afternoon and early evening).

If you have a reference book and you're after a specific species, take the guide book with you as the sellers (mostly hill tribes) will use local names but will recognise the pictures.


As for Plumeria, which one you want.... Plumeria obtusa, Plumeria rubra, Plumeria pudica? Cuttings, potted plants, big ones or a handful of seeds? What colors?

I have stacks of orchids in the gared, seems every tree has one or two hanging.
None of them flower.
Tempted to throw them all away.

^ we have the opposite experience, many of ours flower, some in profusion

as Gypsy mentioned, Kam Tien market is a good place to buy cultivated orchids

if you want wild ones, places like palexxx mentioned are good

we have bought from many places and most do well

in general, moist, some shade, hanging or whatever that variety prefers

each type has it's own preferences, many will not flower unless they are in a good location

the cultivated varieties are easiest to get to flower
