Carabao to perform in Chiang Mai , February 5

Carabao to perform in Chiang Mai to benefit the Thai Orchids Conservation Project
    Nopniwat Krailerg

A three hour concert featuring Carabao, Pu Pongsit Kampi and Baowee will be held at the 700 Years Stadium on February 5.

In addition, 6 of the performers from the Academy Fantasia reality show will perform at the Mae Jo University Stadium.

The Foundation of Native Thai Orchids led by Gen. Picharnmek Muangmanee, 2nd from left, and Dr. Chao Duangduen na Chiengmai, 2ndfrom right, Chairwoman of the Chiang Mai Cultural Council, show some of the native orchids that the organization hopes to protect. With them is Itthiruth Sinthuraks, MD of CIA, right.

The events and a golf tournament are sponsored by the Foundation of Native Thai Orchids and the Creative in Action Company (CIA) to raise funds for the Thai Orchids Conservation Project initiated by Queen Sirikit.

According to Ittiroj Sinturat, Managing Director of CIA, the arrangements for the Carabao led Bao-Parn Concert have taken about 3 months.

It is to be the north’s largest concert yet and Carabao’s biggest in recent years, with magnificent sound and light systems.

The tickets for the Academy Fantasia concert are priced at 300 baht and for the Bao-Parn concert range from 200 baht, 300 baht and 400 baht.

Marmite is right Ad is really pretty awful, although his latest release is quite amusing. He was never really a genuine phua cheewit performer or on the side of 'the ordinary folks' any more than say Mick Jagger. Very sucessful business man and his image is almost iconic being aped by countless youths up and down the country. Went to see him once only, looked like he was drunk and it was embarassing.
Boawee is a very genuine guy with R Siam, used to be in the airforce and had a massive hit three years ago with a song on his second album called koon mai kap rua, a million plus seller never mind the copies. Phua cheewit again, as are most other R siam 'luktung' acts. I'd go to see Boawee but would not cross the road to see carabao.
The Academy Fantasia reality show never seems to come up with any singers that go on to success, at least I can't think of any, was Earn the Star a winner? Grammy do seem to sign a few up and even release a disc with them on, then you never hear of them again, bit like the X factor etc. They are usually pretty faced kids, Ok, but not up to star status.

Thanks for the tip... marked on the calender. Live 4 km. behind Mae Jo Uni and will probably hear every (false) note at volume 10. Will temporarily migrate or listen to some nice 'fresh borrowed' music from a headphone.

Geez bro you putting Carabao in the same basket as one hit wonders? They're in the same class as shit like AC \ DC. All successful musicians are business men this is not a Thai thing. Carabao are a Thai pop sensation and cultural pioneers and put on a great show from what I heard. Can't wait to see em.

There 2 carabao preforming out in a paddy field awhile back,, pulling plows and harrows and were doing a fine a job as I have ever seen and it cost me nothing, I think that they are much more picturesque and environmentally friendly that the Iron Buffalo from China too.

Carabao's music is not pop but classed as pleng phua cheewit. I would like to know how Carabao are 'cultural pioneers' as phua cheewit was so strongly influenced by western music as to be quite removed from other Thai styles and having no real roots in Thai culture, apart from the language. Songs for life was originally part of a protest movement born out of the political upheavals of the early '70's, but it sold out years ago (after 1992) with one of the main bands responsible being this one, all the street gear and attitude is all fake and meaningless and they are not the original band. Caravan the first big songs for life band were the real deal and involved in politics and real protest songs and they did refer to Thai culture in using older folk songs. Ad is somewhat like Bob Dylan who gave lip service to the protests of the '60's without ever going on a march or really giving any support.

Carabao's most famous songs are interesting, Thap lang and made in Thailand both nationalistic rants and nothing about justice for the poor, corruption or democracy. They are just the sort of emotions that the PAD are all too fond of whipping up. It's interesting that the real protesters of today who are the political inheritors of the student movements of the early '70's and 90's do not seem to have any of these 'protest' bands writing and playing music for them. Bands like carabao have been a let down over the years, his latest release which I forget the name of is about a husband and wife fighting, a real effort to change things for the better!
The genuine contributors to Thai culture in popular music are often given an artist of the nation award when they get older with a pension, It will be interesting to see if the 'rebel' without a cause will get the award.

He's performing at Chumphae (80 kms west of KK) the previous Saturday. I might just pop along to see what all the excitement is about.

The wife has already booked a table and hopefully it will be strong enough to take my weight.

If you value your hearing, don't bother. He sounds like a drunk pub singer who also happens to be deaf.
