Smile Trip report: Ayutthaya by train!

I recently went to Ayutthaya by train as a first time Thai train traveler. First of all, the website for the trains do not list the correct times. Secondly, trains are not punctual. You must be switched on because 3rd class inter city trains stop in each city so even with the windows rolled down and the small oscillating fans, you probably won't be cooled off. 15 baht from Bangkok to Ayutthaya. Photo report coming soon.

Sounds like a great experience but at 15 baht, how on earth do they make any money?

I've always wanted to take the train in Thailand for the experience. I was hoping for a mellow ride in an air con car. 3rd class is 15 baht from BKK and here I was with my sexy luggage while the Thais are carrying plastic bags with eggs and soups. I was surprised not to see any chickens and goats. I stayed at Ayutthaya's top hotel (Krungsri River Hotel, Ayutthaya, Pasak river) which wasn't worth the money but it was on the river and near the train station. Rooms were booked with Agoda.com and run about 1500/day. They wanted to charge me 300 baht extra/day for internet(!) but I found an open connection. Renting a motorbike was the way to go in order to see the countryside and about 20 temples. Some consider these temples as nothing more than boring rocks. Well at least it's free. I got a flat tire which had me delayed in a garage where I met these 2 nice office workers who gave me a nice tour of their town. I'll let the photos do the talking. Fire away with any questions.

Yeah, those were the days.. I remember my first commutes were via train - tip catch the express; doesn't stop at every station. Then I progressed to the mini van, now I do it is style in the AC BMW. Still have fond memories of the train trip though; sitting in 3rd class at some station on a stinking hot afternoon with some woman walking through the carriages selling dried pla muk. The saving grace was the guy selling beer out of a plastic bucket..

    Nice pictures.

Black cat in a temple, is that lucky or not?

Good quality pics, thanks. I took that rail trip a long time ago. On the way back bought a ticket Ayuthaya - Bang Pa In but stayed on the train all the way to Bangkok. Saved at least 10 baht,

I took the mini bus up and the train back. I enjoyed the train ride more. I remember when the ticket guy told me 15 baht I started laughing.

Don't really trust it to go that far, might look at taking the train there sometime though!

The guy weeding the stupa should start looking for a new union rep ! I bet that wasn't in the job description. Nice pics. Last time I did the same trip it was 10 baht. Inflation is a real kill joy.

I thought it was 'Kuay' that meant 'cock' or something similar.

It's supposed to be Wat Gluay (Banana Temple) but the signs dept thought Wat Kluay was better (Wat Penis).

1500 baht doesn't sound too bad judging from the photo of the hotel room.

Nice photo's, and for 15 baht the train looks fairly clean too!

I really should get out to Ayutthaya someday!

    Nice thread!
