Would you take a child to Sihanoukville?

My first instinct is, now way!

Will be travelling to a few places in Cambo with Mrs and 4 year old. There's no way I'd take my kids to Pattaya, but there are places nearby that would be OK.

So is the whole area full of scumbag pedos and rusky crims, or are there family friendly areas? I've heard its the Pattaya of Cambo, only worse.

Don't mind spending up on a decent resort if we're not going to walk out the front doors and bump into some chav rogering a ladyboy up the alley, so to speak.

You are being unkind to your kids. Pattaya is a great place for them and I have taken all the kids in our family there. My daughter will be revisiting in November as an adult to show her boyfriend the place where she and her cousins first saw the sea.

I wouldn't take a child to Sihanoukville, there are already lots on the beach to choose from.

What's the alternative, leave your kid with the in-laws? That's pretty cruel.

I don't see the problem with taking your kid to Pattaya or SKV as long as your look after him. I took mine to some places in PI that others might consider dangerous or inappropriate but there were no problems and we had a great six months.

Kids seem to love Pattaya. Staying somewhere like woodlands resort by the pool where they'll be perfectly safe all day with smiling staff around. Can't imagine what kids wouldn't like that.

Not as if the average parent plans a midnight bar crawl with them. That's when they'll be tucked up safe and sound, like mum!

Kids don't draw those petty lines [as some might] towards their grandparents.

Leaving the one year old coz he's a pain in the arse to take away and would not appreciate it.

Sure I would take them to Pattas a bit away from the red light stuff

But I don't know about SKV, is it everywhere or just confined to one area? How bad is it really?

I been doing some research and there are some pretty classy looking resorts. Want somewhere with a good pool and close to a beach, probably one of those type of big all inclusive resorts a bit out of the busy part.

    Anyone suggestions?

    why not:

there plenty of families that vacation in SHV an unless ur out and about at night ( which i doubt with a 4 years old) whats the bg deal
The independence is great ( although not cheap) , private beach, look at the Sokha hotel as well
    http://www.sokhahotels.com/sihanoukville/

As far as pattaya goes, same, lots of entertainment/resorts for families with kids

SHV wishes it could be the Pattaya of Cambodia LOL
Patttaya gets more visitors than all of Cambodia!!

    but it wont ever happen

To the op, i assume u wouldn't take ur kid to Patong as well?

That's kind of what I'm asking, is SHV a big Patong / walking street, or is it confined to a smallish are like those places?

We certainly won't be going out at night. I might, we won't

I have not been in Snooky since 2008. It was nothing like Patong or Pattaya. Lots of beaches lots of backpackers.
I stayed at the Sokha beach resort, it has its own private beach and great facilities gym pools etc. unfortunately it was quite expensive and also rather boring and I spent my time on the beach next door which had real people.
You would have no problem with children, I would say from my experience perfectly safe
if a bit boring after a few days.

I live in SV. The comparison to Pattaya is just fucking stupid. This is a terrible town for a sex tourist. There's about 10X as many whores in Hua Hin as here. Be aware that it rains at least twice as much here as in PP. IIWY, I'd stay away until Nov. What's more depressing than sitting inside while it's pouring rain in a beach town ?

That sentence doesn't even make sense.

Sending your kids to the ban nok with no air con or wifi to share a bed with grandma for a week while you go off on holiday is cruel. Your kid may butcher you in your sleep some years later for the mental scarring you have caused.

Normal practice here and kids accept it. My MiL who lives with a Swede looks after her grandson when she's in Thailand. But for 6 months of the year the Swede takes her to Sweden and she pays the boys mothers family to look after him during this period. Neither his actual mother or father are prepared to look after him. He accepts it and gets on with life just like all the other kids that stay with grandma whilst the mother works the bar somewhere. We may think it cruel but.................

Yes , when I was a child my Mum and Dad had two holidays a year....A family Holiday and a Holiday were they went together whilst me and my sisters stay with our grandparents or sometimes an Aunt and Uncle . Nothing cruel about it and we always had a great time ,plus it gave Mum and Dad some quality time together
