Not bored at all in Phnom Penh

I was in PP at the same time as the bored bloke. How can you be bored? Weird.

Anyway, the reason for the trip was a change in Visa rules effective 1st August which meant I had to leave the country for my non imm b regardless of having 11 month of work permit and not had to do this before. Maybe I left it too late? Who cares.

So I flew out on Saturday. Business class on TG was 17,100 baht, but when I got to Swampy I realised I had been chucked onto Thai Smile! And they do not have Business Class, only Smile Plus.

It's basically the premium economy seat but in a row of three they only sell 2 seats. On both my legs I had a row to myself so no real problem. One the plus side, the trolly dollies were top caliber - good at their jobs as well.

I had booked the New Town Hotel on 174 st which is a stones throw from walk about area. I had what they laughably called an Executive Suite on the top floor. Cost $230 from Sat to Tuesday, and that was with some minibar action and a meal or two from room service. Good value.

My only complaint was that on the first night the aircon in the bedroom was not cooling down enough, so next morning a man came round and fixed it. Aside from that I would happily recommend it again.

I had arrived at night - nice view

On the right, there is a Chicken restaurant, plays blues all the time, and the last night snack I had from there was very very good.

Here's what the view was like the next morning.

Forgot to slip this in - I took a quick phone shot of the chick at check in - Although it is a shit shot, and its all subjective, I would say this girls legs and arse were fantastic!

Breakfast included - buffet affair. I grabbed a plate of muck, which included Sweat and Sour chicken, some Pork stuff, some very fine Potato au Gratin. The other days I simply went and cleared out their bacon with a couple of eggs.

Including the ubiquitous "Egg's Any Style".

I asked for mine in the Style of Tony Bennett. I got them over easy.

Maybe I don't get bored because I am happy to bumble about seeing things.

The streets to me were fascinating.

That all the pics I took. The rest of the time I was hung over, or getting bored with Thai BS bureaucracy in the Consulate.

FYI - They now say 4 days to return a VISA!!! I sweet talked them into doing it in the standard 2 because of a trail of flights I had booked and showed them the hassle it would be to change all the flights.

I also saw 3 people rejected in the space of 20 minutes.

1 was as fluent Thai shifter of 50 odd - too many tourist visas and they said no. He was crying.

1 was an a dive school bloke, who had a trail of visa runs in his passport, and he was applying for a Ed Visa.... they laughed at him and said no. Literally laughed at him. He was gutted.

Street 104 is interesting by the way.

1 was some weird guy from America who did not have an exit stamp from Thailand in his passport. They said no, and that according to his passport he had a very large over stay to sort out. He was getting very agitated, and I only assume because he could not explain why he had no exit stamp, that he walk across the border some place and thought he would be OK. Even the agent bloke who stands in the office said there was nothing he could do - get the exit stamp.

    Great pics mate.

I have about 1 second to spend with people who say they get bored are or bored.

If one is confined to a Hospital bed that's fair enough but if there is nothing wrong with them except they feel " Bored " then it's pathetic innit.

The thing that freaked me about Choeung Ek was that there was still heaps of human bones sticking out of the ground that the tourists were wandering around on.

This a few years ago so maybe they dug and tidied more up.

The bones even had fragments of clothing fabric still wrapped round them.

Wonder what's the story behind the Rolls Royce car, nice pics.

Reminds me of when i was last there in 2003 and saw a Jaguar XJS driving down a dusty track in the middle of nowhere, when all there was a the time was small motorbikes on the road.

Yeah I wondered that as well.

I guess whoever owned it got bored of fixing it and just left it there.

They seem to pick them up now and stick them in boxes.

I did a double take when I saw that, and quickly shot off some pics. Scratch???? WTF.

Yup - me too. Who can be bored? Get in a tuktuk and cruise about. Everythings so cheap it doesn't matter, and some lovely eye candy about.

Most of them are - the girl getting off the bike, when you zoom in on the raw picture you can see she is not over impressed either.

Stand by what I said in my post - PP sucks a bag of dicks.

Respect to the dead and all but S21 and the Killing Fields were 'meh'.

Pretty much all those pics you took I coulda taken too. Took a few, then enjoyed the pool and AC-room. Took a gander by the river, walk down Slag Street (by fuck were they horrible looking thing) And did go to a decent nightclub where I spent some quality time with a sweet (working?) girl. All I did was buy her drinks (she struggled to match me, so it worked out reasonable)

Perhaps I was spoilt in Malaysia - Penang, Georgetown, Lankawi - what a treat.

PP - dirty, dusty/muddy, crap traffic. Positives - decent food, cheapish hotel with pool, and, um..... that's it.

Guess I prefer different things to others on this forum. Couldn't be bothered getting into a slugfest over it.

In Bangkok now - it's crapper than ever. On par with PP (I don't do sleaze, or touristy crap or gawp at random temples and suchlike)

As it stands I won't be doing PP or BKK again. Siem Reap and Sihanoukville - yes. Malaysia - yes. Philippines - anywhere but Manila or Boracay.

Yeah - top three shit cities I've visited in Asia:
    1. PP
    2. Manila
    3. Bangkok.

Call themselves 'developing'. I would go for 'sliding into a shit abyss'

    Fire away haters!

Insane does not equate to exciting.

Spend a day with me - see how bored you are/feel. Perhaps you haven't been to as many countries as myself or experienced as much as I have thus places like PP feel 'insane' and snap-shot worthy. Maybe I'm just world-weary. If Cambodia was the first country I ever visited outside of my own (a pretty hectic and beautiful place) I might be in awe of it. But 'fraid not - I served in the border war (Mozambique and Angola) - exciting/boring?

I've covered five Asian countries in the last month - enjoyed most, did plenty.

But if boring it is you think I am, then so be it. Not interested in keyboard warrior wars.

    38. Don't sit in bars. Today I was up at 9.30.

    1. Had some brekkers, took a walk through around Soi Rambuttri to see what's changed - the old 200baht/night place is shuttered (the owner passed away in January).

    2. Priced tickets to Yangon, China and my hometown.

    3. Checked with Western Union what details are needed to send a mate money.

    4. Walked around the supermarket near Khao Sarn. Why - just to see what the aunties were buying.

    5. Checked out a new hotel, cuz this one is pretty guff.

    6. This evening - take a walk on Khao Sarn to see what's changed - a lot of places are shuttered on Soi Rambuttri.

    7. Have a swim on the rooftop pool.

    8. Conclude the evening with a couple games of darts/pool.

    9. Try and finish the book I bought in SR (Cambodia's Curse)

    10. Snooze.

    Fairly boring I guess.

Anyway - great pics, perhaps I was a bit exhausted from being on the road for a while, and I've never been mad about big, noisy cities.

    Peace out.
