Central to Open New Mega-Complex by 2013

    UPDATE : 10 February 2011

A leading Thai retailer is planning to launch a new mega-complex which will consist of a shopping mall and a high-end hotel, in a bid to help boost economic confidence in the country.

Central Retail Corporation (CRC) CEO Tos Chirathivat revealed that CRC is planning to build a new “Central Embassy” project in the center of Bangkok, worth more than 10 billion baht.

The project is planned to house a large-scale shopping mall and a premium hotel, with construction scheduled to kick off by the first quarter of this year.

The project is expected to be completed and operational by the year 2013.

Central Embassy will house an 8-floor shopping mall and a 30-floor hotel, which will offer as many as 222 guest rooms.

CRC is confident the emergence of such a mega-complex will be a new source of employment opportunities and will generate revenue for the economy while helping to boost economic confidence in Thailand.

When asked about the ongoing political conflict, Tos said the problem is a short-term issue and that foreign investors understand the situation.
"Slavery is the daughter of darkness; an ignorant people is the blind instrument of its own destruction; ambition and intrigue take advantage of the credulity and inexperience of men who have no political, economic or civil knowledge. They mistake pure illusion for reality, license for freedom, treason for patriotism, vengeance for justice."-Simón Bolívar

    China newspaper touts Bangkok mall

The influential China Daily newspaper on Tuesday carried a major feature on the Central Embassy mall, which unabashedly aims at serving the Chinese tourist market.

"Thailand's largest retail conglomerate hopes to attract more high-end Chinese tourists with a new luxurious shopping mall, following an upsurge in visitors over the past year and even greater numbers expected this year," said the story, which also was carried in the newspaper's online edition.

Central Mall opened in December on Ploenchit Road, after the department store company purchased part of the grounds of the British Embassy, at the corner of Wireless Road.

Chart Chirathivat, managing director of the Central Mall project, told China Daily that the store believes "a large number of Chinese are still wealthy and keen on buying luxurious goods during the global recession," the newspaper reported.

China replaced Malaysia as the biggest source of tourists to Thailand, with 1.94 million arrivals in the first nine months of 2012, up 39 percent year-on-year, according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand.

Beijing travel agent Song Meidan told the newspaper the average Chinese traveller to Thailand is growing more affluent.

"Thailand used to be the first overseas tourist destination for Chinese due to its relatively low prices compared with other popular destinations," the newspaper quoted the agent.

"But as the number of Chinese tourists going there has been soaring, there has been a greater need for high-end services too."

But will they really have anything other than the same shops that they have in all their malls? Are they telling their existing customers that they are not worthy enough to get the really good stuff and that we are all just chaff that no longer interests them? Do they expect the chinese to stay in the hotel and never leave (watch out for the casino opening there or close by)?

All a tad patronising really and I hope they get the same calibre of Chinese mainlanders tourists Hong Kong has been putting up with for years
