Thailand : Foreign tourists drops 14.1%

    Foreign tourists drops 14.1%
    26/09/2009

The number of foreign tourists visiting Thailand over the first eight months of this year went down 14.1 per cent from the same period last year to only 8.9 million, deputy spokesman of the Democrat Party, Atthawit Suwanphakdee, said on Saturday.

Mr Athhawat attributed the declining to impacts of the Songkran riots by the anti-government red-shirts in April and the pandemic of the A (H1N1) flu virus.

However, he was confident that the situation of the tourism sector will improve in the fourth quarter of the year as the number of foreign arrivals is increasing.

He called on both the red and yellow-shirt people groups to think of the country and refrain from rallies that could worsen the country’s ailing economy.

It’s so pathetic how they can dismiss the airport hijacking by the PAD as the one of the main reasons for the fall in tourism.

Are you seriously saying the airport takeovers and the international coverage it got had no effect on tourism?

The 'official' dismissal and the sweeping under the rug angle. The mention of the Reds activities are first and foremost.

I was held up for five days when the yellow shirts blockaded the airport.
When i visited the airlines office to rearrange my flight details there were more angry tourist/business men and women then i had ever seen.
Some people had to stay an extra two weeks thanks to the yellow peril.
The fact is the only people i meet that were happy during this time were the Brits, everyone else was swearing never to return to Thailand.
The yellow peril have really helped to mess up the tourist business, lets hope they don't get chance to mess it up anymore.

Loads of people are figuring Thailand out and the more people that come the more word will get round.

The airport shutdowns and political rallies only add fuel to an already burning pyre.

Thailand is in terminal decline, and it's only a matter of time.

So what you are saying is that the more that people come here, the less people will come? Do you get your logic from The Beano?

The more people have been coming the more Thailand is being exposed as a giant, dirty, dishonest brothel. If you can't work out what was inferred by my post then life must be tough.

We went to the coast for a long week-end and ALL hotels were booked solid . . . The manager of the place we usually stay (Swiss Garden Resort) says his overseas bookings have increased at a phenomenal rate . . . (Germans, British, French, Scandis and Dutch)

Although it was full, the types of tourists are happily lacking the lager louts and general thugs . . . Thailand can keep them

    down 14% ? that's actually quite reasonable,

France tourism was down more than 20% but retailers said the season wasn't as bad as expected, the fewer tourists were spending more apparently on lower priced items

Thailand has experienced an incredible gain in tourists over the last decade or so. During this period in which the number of foreign tourists have more than doubled there is one thing that is exactly the same in 2009 as it was in 1998: there will always be a critical mass of internally perturbed farangs chanting that unless Thailand changes no one will come here.
