Feb exports sink 11.3 pct

Thailand's exports fell 11.3 per cent month-on-month in February while imports plummeted 40.3 per cent, according to the Ministry of Commerce.

The export value in the previous month was US$11.736 billion while the import value was US$8.159 billion, Permanent Secretary for Commerce Siripol Yodmuangcharoen said on Wednesday.

The country recorded a trade surplus of US$3.577 billion last month.

During the first two months of 2009, the export value dipped 19.2 per cent, or US$22.232 billion. The import value was US$ 8.159 billion or 38.9 per cent lower.

Mr Siripol said exports in February were higher than its previous month, and this was contributed to higher sales in agricultural and agro-industrial products such as rice, shrimps and processed poultry.

At the same time, the country imported less fuel products, machines, electrical equipment, raw materials and other consumer goods.
