BANGKOK - THAILAND will request a US$1.5 billion (S$2.2 billion) loan from world institutions for infrastructure projects, the finance minister said on Thursday, after lowering the economy's growth target to five per cent.
Mr Suchart Thada-thamrongvej told reporters he would travel to a meeting of the World Bank in the United States Thursday, where he would request funds from its representatives as well as officials from the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
'The loans are to be used for Thailand's mega-projects, US$500 million from the World Bank and US$1 billion from ADB,' Mr Suchart said, without giving any further details of the projects.
Referring to his reduction of the growth rate target, Mr Suchart told reporters: 'It is difficult to forecast the economy growth considering the problems from the current economic crisis and political turmoil'.
'This year the Thai economy is likely to grow at five percent or lower.'
Mr Suchart said gross domestic product growth in the third quarter was expected to be more than four per cent while growth would slow further in the fourth quarter.
Previous finance minister Surapong Suebwonglee already lowered growth expectations when he announced on September 10 that Thailand would likely miss its 6 per cent target after political turmoil had sapped investor confidence. -- AFP
