Japan hopes for ASEAN regional investment headquarters in Bangkok

Japan hopes for ASEAN regional investment headquarters in Bangkok

BANGKOK, Sept 27 (TNA) -- Amid the world'wide economic slowdown, Japan wants Thailand to amend "rigid procedures" and improve public utilities, and sees Thailand the right site for a regional headquarters to serve full market liberalisation under the ASEAN Free Trade Agreement which will take effect in 2010.

Board of Investment (BoI) secretary-general Sathit Chanjavanakul said after presiding Friday at a meeting of 25 Thai government agencies and Japanese officials that Japan asked Thailand to relax the Foreign Business Act, ease the granting of visas and work permits, and simplify customs procedures.

Mr. Sathit said Japanese investors are choosing one Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) country as a regional centre to deal with the ASEAN Free Trade Agreement and Thailand is considered as being ideal.

However Thailand could lose the opportunity if tight government measures on foreign investment persist, Mr. Sathit warned.

From 1970 until mid-2008 the BoI had issued about Bt2 trillion in promotional privileges for Japanese investment in Thailand in over 5,000 investment projects.

Trade between the two countries rose greatly after the Japan-Thailand Economic Partnership Agreement was enforced last November. (TNA)

..and of course a Japanese company received the MRT tunnelling contract in exchange for a very suitable bribe, which must make Bangkok the ideal site for ASEAN's regional free trade centre.

interesting ain't it , reading 'tween the lines they are saying the Thailand wants Japan to want ..................

Thailand is considered as being ideal.
as no doubt are others ................

to be honest , it's a rather large mouthful for
    Japanese investors
    to be choosing
one Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) country as a regional centre to deal with the ASEAN Free Trade Agreement
and the obvious place would be Jakarta where the bloc's HQ are ....
