640 investors seek promotional privileges in 1st six months

BANGKOK, July 20 (TNA) -- A total of 640 investment projects have sought promotional privileges from the Thai government's Board of Investment (BoI) during the first half of 2008, down only one project from the corresponding period of 2007.

Total investment value seeking BoI promotional privileges during the first half year, however, totaled only Bt203.7 billion, down 13.32 per cent from the corresponding period last year.

Of the total projects seeking privileges from BoI during the first half of 2008, foreign investment came first with 237 projects followed by 211 projects to be invested by Thais and the remaining 192 projects were joint investments.

Japanese investors remained in first place among foreign investors seeking privileges, with 166 projects, followed by Europeans with 94 projects. the majority of the projects were involved with service and infrastructure sectors.

During the first half of 2008, the BoI granted promotional privileges to 555 projects, down from 659 granted during the same period of 2007. The 555 projects involved investments totaling Bt185.7 billion and could create 79,033 new jobs in the country. (TNA)
