Thailand : New crisis not impossible

    New crisis not impossible

    NUNTAWUN POLKUAMDEE
    Wednesday, April 30, 2008

An economic crisis could hit in Thailand in the next few years if the government does not take strong measures, according to economists.

Anusorn Tamajai, the dean of Economics at Rangsit University, told a Securities Analysts Association (SAA) forum yesterday that economic problems had already started with high inflation, high oil prices and rising agricultural prices, and a lack of government measures to address the issues.

''If there is no concrete measure to solve the problems on time, they will increase, and the gap between the rich and poor will widen,'' he said.

Dr Anusorn said Thai political problems had impeded growth over the past three to four years. Politics had affected investment confidence, and infrastructure investment was too low.

Ekniti Nitithanprapas, a director of a macroeconomic analysis with the Fiscal Policy Office, said a survey of foreign companies in Thailand revealed that the most significant problem was the lack of skilled labour.

The companies had no plans to go abroad, he said, but were unwilling to expand production in Thailand. ''The biggest barrier for labour skills is a lack of English skills and management skills. I think that the government should reform education and should arrange an education plan to suit country's economic goals,'' said Dr Ekniti.

    Well Noooo~ shit.

I can't decide if it's the moronic reporters looking for stories where there are none or the daft politicians who want to see their names in the newspapers that make this whole circus seem surreal.
