Deputy PM Surapong calls for Constitution amendment
BANGKOK, March 21 (TNA) – Thai Deputy Prime Minister Surapong Suebwonglee on Friday called on parliamentarians to amend the Constitution in order to restore confidence among investors.
Mr. Surapong, concurrently finance minister, said local and foreign investors had been concerned with the country’s political uncertainty given a possible dissolution of two political parties in the coalition government on electoral fraud cases.
He said investors were also not at ease after the Supreme Court agreed on Thursday to hear the vote-buying allegation against House Speaker Yongyuth Tiyapairat (People Power Party-Chiang Rai).
Mr. Yongyuth is a PPP deputy leader. If found guilty as charged, he could be disqualified from the parliamentary seat.
According to the Constitution, a political party has to be dissolved if a party executive is guilty of electoral fraud.
Mr. Surapong, also PPP secretary general, said members of the Lower and Upper houses should urgently amend the Constitution so as to restore confidence among investors.
The PPP, he said, would raise the issue for discussion with party members before leaving for Japan on March 30-31 to sign an agreement for loans from the Japan Bank for International Cooperation. (TNA) --E111
