Songkran spending expected at 13-year high record this year

BANGKOK, 11th April 2018 (NNT) – It is estimated that Songkran spending in 2018 will hit the highest level in 13 years.

The director of the Economic and Business Forecasting Center at the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce, Mr. Thanavat Phonvichai, said that the latest survey of Thai consumer behavior found that 81.5 percent plan to spend more than last year during this Songkran holiday.

The expected spending plan is set to inject into the local economy over 132 billion baht – a 3.5-percent rise from a year ago.

Mr. Thanavat said that this forecast amount is the highest recorded during the Songkran festival in 13 years, partly due to this year’s long holiday of five to six days that allow people to travel and spend more.

However, he noted that economic growth in Thailand is not yet broad-based as farm product prices remains low and the government has not yet successfully addressed it.

But he said that Thailand’s 2018 GDP will still expand at an expected rate of between 4.2 percent and 4.6 percent, on the back of growing tourism and exports as well as further public investment.

Not forgetting high employment and rising wages/prices. Of course there will be more cash spent.

Downside might be the lack of election bribes due to the missing elections.
