Thailand best country to start up business: U.S. News & World Report

BANGKOK, 27 January 2018 (NNT) – Thailand was named the best country to start up a business by a U.S. news agency for a second consecutive year.

Commerce Minister Sonthirat Sonthijirawong revealed the U.S. News & World Report has listed Thailand as the best country to start a business for 2018, which is the second consecutive year which this country has topped the survey.

The list, published on usnews.com website, was complied from a survey made with some 21,000 samples across the globe. Thailand is positioned as the number one among other 80 countries in the list. The country is also listed as the 8th best country for investment among 25 countries worldwide.

He said the results from this survey show the perception in the international community that Thailand has adjusted its regulations to provide an investment friendly atmosphere according to the government's Thailand 4.0 goal.

Thailand's ranking on the World Bank's 2018 Ease of Doing Business list also improved by 20 positions, moving the country from being the 46th on the list in 2017 to the 26th this year.

I don't know whether to laugh or frown at these sort of reports.

For a start, FDI into Thailand has dropped off a cliff over the last decade- Vietnam for example, which attracted a fraction of Thailand's foreign investment a decade ago, now safely exceeds Thailand in this regard. That's a major ten year turnaround, especially considering that "Thailand best country to start up business".

Transparency International has ranked Thailand lower on it's global index than at any time since Banharn (Mr 10%) I believe, quite a precipitous drop compared to any government from Thaksin era onwards. Thailand's response? Well that came out just recently- to declare 'Transparency Thailand' independent of Transparency International! And who possibly fails to get the joke- "Transparency Thailand". At least they have a sense of humor.

Then there is the recent report that came out- bar operators complaining about the torrent of tight uniforms of several different colors asking for, erm, charitable donations. This has happened since the last coup. Anyone know a happy bar/ restaurant owner here? I'd love to meet him. Just one example of many, Mata Hari- one of Pattaya's most esteemed and long established fine dining restaurants (and my personal favorite) closed down late last year, due to 'trading conditions' according to Louis Noll, the owner.

I fully acknowledge the efforts of the Thai gov't and Thaksins (whoops, the Generals) economic guru Somkid to attract, or rather re-attract, FDI with generous tax concessions, tax holidays and so forth. But I can only half agree with the survey. Thailand seems every bit as attractive a place to close a business as open one up.

    More to follow...

    My thoughts entirely.

Also a good place to start a business which spawns at least 3 copycats.

I could not help but notice that the NBT article (linked in the OP) provided no link whatsoever to the
    U.S. News & World Report
survey they were quoting. That could get you banned from SC! H'mmm- now that's a red rag to a bull, so I decided to do some internet sleuthing. It quickly became apparent that
    "U.S. News & World Report, "
and it's readership do not attach great importance to it's annual "Best country to start up a business" survey. In fact, it is not an original survey at all per se- it appears to be clipped from a subsection of another survey- "World's best country" (Luxembourg won, from memory).

Don't believe me? Then try this for an exercise in internet obscurity. Here is the Homepage of US News.com (a company owned by NY property developer Mort Zuckerman, his other media holding being the NY Daily News).
    https://www.usnews.com/

    Wiki-
U.S. News transitioned to primarily web-based publishing in 2010. U.S. News is best known today for its influential Best Colleges and Best Hospitals rankings, but it has expanded its content and product offerings in education, health, money, careers, travel, and cars. The rankings are popular in North America but have drawn widespread criticism from colleges, administrations, and students for their dubious, disparate, and arbitrary nature. The ranking system by U.S. News is usually contrasted with the Washington Monthly and Forbes rankings.

^ Wot, not one mention of 'Best country to open a business" or even "Best country" annual surveys? H'mmm. So now, those members of the TD CSI who have nothing better to do with their time- try navigating from the USNews Homepage, linked above, to the following- the actual 'survey':-

    https://www.usnews.com/news/best-cou...art-a-business
Seriously- try it. I had great fun.

I'd love to copy and paste the actual text (a short paragraph) but can't- because it's a Slideshow! It's also a joke- no wonder government owned NBT did not provide a link themselves. Quelle surprise- the junta is clutching at straws.

All a bit of a hoax and the usual manipulation of illusional boosterism from the Thai authorities crowd.
Far more likely that such promotion of falsities are found throughout English-language editions, less reprinted from Thai news sources.

Many, are yet to connect the dots as to why.

That's very true. It can be observed once driving up-country. You will see so many new businesses, very fresh. And you can see so many collapsed businesses as well.
A very remarkable it is seen in tourists areas (Phuket, Koh Samui, Koh Lanta, etc), new hotels, resorts very adjacent to a collapsed objects.

(BTW, as discussed here recently, the FDI has nothing to do with the above described facts.)

However, to be fair:just by a simple observing - when driving up-country - and also by seeing the huge industrial estates - it can be assumed that the new lasting businesses prevail...
