BANGKOK, 22nd January 2018 (NNT) - Commerce Minister Sonthirat Sonthijirawong says he believes allowing the sugar price to float would have a positive impact on sugar based products.

According to the minister, retailers and food manufacturers will be invited to a meeting to discuss the possibility of lowering prices of sugar and sugar-based products after the global price of sugar recently declined.

The meeting will be held this month or soon after the Office of the Cane and Sugar Board releases its official announcement to float the price.

Despite the floating price policy, the minister insisted that sugar would remain on the list of controlled household goods.

Sonthirat also said that, by letting the sugar price float, prices of soft drinks, baked goods and other food items will decline, in line with the global sugar price.

Meanwhile, consumers are urged to call 1569 if they spot overpriced sugar products.
