Political donations to be tax deductible

NLA panel backs party donations in tax forms

    MONGKOL BANGPRAPA

A National Legislative Assembly subcommittee supports allowing taxpayers to make tax-deductible donations to political parties on their tax forms. The sub-panel, chaired by Borwornsak Uwanno vetting the organic law on political parties, yesterday discussed donations for political parties in the draft organic law.

Mr Borwornsak, basing his suggestion on an idea floated earlier by former finance minister Tarrin Nimman-ahaeminda, said taxpayers should be allowed to submit tax payment forms to the Revenue Department stating that they want to donate up to 100 baht to a certain political party.

The sub-panel agreed in principle with the suggestion.

''It's not compulsory, but the stipulation will prompt each political party to campaign for support [from taxpayers],'' he said, adding taxpayers who contribute might feel as if they own the party.
Mr Borwornsak also proposed that individuals donating to a party should not receive more than 5,000 baht a year in tax breaks and firms up to 20,000 baht. Besides discussing tax-related issues, the sub-panel also detailed the definitions of donations. They came up with 11 definitions that covered directly contributing money to a party, providing services at discounted rates and offering rent-free items.
