The government has set a target to earn as much as 3.03 trillion baht from tourism industry for 2017 with emphasis on “quality” tourists instead of quantity, said government spokesman Lt-Gen Sansern Kaewkamnerd on Sunday.

He said Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha has wanted tourists to spend longer and worthy time in Thailand, especially in Bangkok.

Under the slogan of “Amazing Thailand 2018”, he said the government would seek cooperation from private and government sectors, tourism operators, shopping malls and airlines to join in the activities to promote tourism and to attract more tourists into the country with emphasis on tourism to learn the Thai way of life.

The prime minister has marked November 1 as the launch of the “Amazing Thailand 2018” tourism year which will last until January 1, 2019 because several important events are scheduled to take place at the end of this year.

These include a parade of naval ships of Asean nations and other nations in Pattaya Bay on November 18 and the air race show, known as Air Race 1 Thailand, which is reputed to be the biggest air race show ever held in Asia.

Lt-Gen Sansern said the prime minister would like all the provinces to participate in the tourism promotion by presenting their unique identities, be it cultural, art, geographical or local wisdom to give more choices of what they want to see andvisit so that local villagers will have a share of tourism revenue.
