Commerce Min to curb feed corn price as oversupply looms

BANGKOK, 9 August 2017 (NNT) – The Ministry of Commerce is foreseeing an oversupply of feed corn later this year and is looking to borrow the crop management model of Maha Sarakham province to avert a price drop.

Commerce Minister Apiradi Tantraporn reported that supplies of corn for animals have begun to saturate the market and an oversupply problem is likely between September and November this year. As a preparatory measure, she said the ministry plans to apply a model which has been used for managing cassava output in Maha Sarakham to the management of feed corn in the hope of keeping a price slump at bay.

Under this model, middlemen buying maize from farmers will be required to declare the amount of any purchase over 50 tons and the place of storage as well as information on the feed production plant to which the maize will be sold. The collection of data will allow authorities to keep track of the amount of feed corn entering the market and the buying and selling prices in order to regulate them accordingly. Currently, the factory price of feed corn is standing at 8 baht per kilogram.

At the same time, Ms Apiradi indicated that the price of longan has started to rebound following increased sales to both domestic and overseas markets. She, however, encouraged longan farmers to adopt various growing and caring techniques so as to ensure higher quality and price.

Well until now authorities were promoting corn crop (mainly a cattle food) as an alternative culture, many followed the advice leading to over supply as occured with heveas. I wonder what crop they will entice now

All they need to do is put the tariffs beck on wheat imported for animal feed that will mean that imported wheat is no longer cheaper than locally grown corn.

That's obviously not so easy if the big importer(s) is somebody...
