BANGKOK, 23 August 2016 (NNT) - The Government Savings Bank (GSB) has shut down more than 3,000 ATMs after cash totaling 12 million baht was stolen from its 21 ATMs. The bank confirmed the incident did not affect deposits of its customers.
GSB President Chartchai Payuhanaveechai said the money was stolen from the 21 ATMs from 1 - 8 August. The bank had already shut down some of its ATMs and asked the ATM manufacturer to urgently develop a program to reset the machines’ system, he said. The bank was waiting for the results of an investigation into the case, said Mr. Chatchai.
The president confirmed the bank was cooperating with police officers to urgently find the culprits.
Governor of the Bank of Thailand Veerathai Santiprabhob said the bank had detected irregularities of the ATMs since 1 August. The central bank therefore shut down the ATM system in an attempt to stop the damages and asked other commercial banks to check their ATM system, according to the governor.
Mr. Veerathai confirmed that there was only the GSB whose ATMs were hacked, saying the software of Thai ATMs has been continuously updated.
