Bath at strongest in more than nine years

(BangkokPost.com) - The baht rose to its strongest level against the dollar in more than nine years in onshore trade Thursday, helped by the appointment of Chalongphob Sussangkran as new finance minister.

The baht rose to 35.10 baht per dollar today, the strongest level since September 1997.

Analysts said the strengthening of the baht results from the appointment of Mr Chalongphob, former president of Thailand Development and Research Institute, who is an opposition to the Dec 18 reserve rule on foreign capital inflows.

Mr Chalongphob, former World Bank economist, had urged the government to relax the capital controls that required 30 per cent of foreign speculative inflows to be held in reserve with the central bank for a year.
