    [QUOTE=Thai Dhupp;3874771][QUOTE=ootai;3874749]TD

"...and you have the rain-filled ones linked together to give you access to 4000 litres?"

No we have one at the side of the house and one at an end. That way we can catch water from 2 different downpipes

"That also makes perfect sense - you do not want to be sucking the last few milliliters containing the tank sediment. but...you had to 'modify it? Does that mean that although it shows those 2x 1/2 inch openings, only the upper one is ready to use?"

No they are both ready to use but the top one is an inlet and if you connect water to it the water flows out at the top of the tank. The tanks came supplied with a float valve which you can fit to the top of this inlet if you want to pump water into the tank. The 2 inch opening is also able to be used as an outlet.

"Did you retro-fit a filter to that line? If it IS calcium, then it should dissolve off with vinegar. Did you try that? also we hear many times about the 'cleaning' properties of coca-cola and the fact, they say that it 'rots teeth'. Teeth = calcium... may be worth a try if you did not do so already"

We have not fitted any filter/s as yet. The Missus is talking about getting some and then replacing the shower screens with new ones. As for cleaning I have tried vinegar, coke, Bam and everything I could find in stores here. I also brought back some CLR from Australia and tried that but no luck and the CLR stands for Calcium Limescale Rust and it didn't work either.

So after thinking about it if I had a chance to do anything differently it would be to make a fitting to go through the 2 inch opening but took water higher up in the tank ( like a snorkel) and use that as the outlet rather than ruining the tank by punching a hole in the inlet pipe. I suppose though if I wanted to pump water into the tank I could just fit a pipe on the outside
of the tank, wouldn't look as nice though.

The settlements from the bore well are not only calcium but obviously with added rust from the oxidated iron contained in the bore water. I wrote about that explicitely in my thread about swimming pool and my troubled water source, however, managable.

Best how to remove the residues in the bathroom, beside the vinegar (it's not so strong), is an acid HCL, of course diluted (acid into water, not opposite), used by swimming pool people to reduce pH instead of expensive pH Minus sold by shops. (I do not make myself a headache with a careful maintaining of the pH, it does not matter for water clarity, only for effectiveness of chlorine if against algae that I manage by other means. And for drinking water is pH allowed with very broad range 6.5 - 9.5, for swimming it should bite me?).

To improve the water from bore well (if it is not so strong ironized as my water), after certain sedimenting in the tank, is good to have a backwashable filter shown by Cyrille in the other BIP thread (the one not so Famous) #666, seen everywhere in Thailand (ca. 10,000B by village craftsmen made), or a similar one offered by GH, TW, and others.

^Then, the automatic pump supplying the water pressure into the house sucking the water from the storage tank will push the water through such filter filled by river sand of 2 - 3 sizes. After certain period, 1 - 2 months, the sand is backwashed in opposite direction - from bottom to top - used for garden watering.

Hey Klondyke...thanks for that. yes I read your pool thread and it does all make sense to me

You also used that flocculent, was it alum? to clearify the water i think...

^Alum (Alaun in German) is a wonderful material, very easy to get in Thailand , a sack of SaanSom 30 kg for 350 Baht. (Unlike nowadays in Europe, whilst our fathers many years ago used to have it for stopping a bleeding when cut at shaving).

In Thailand is available either as large clear crystals (like pieces of ice) or crashed, easy to disolve. People in villages where they have problems with iron water (SaaNim) know that, throwing ocassionally a piece of it in their tanks.

SaanSom is an ancient material used not only as a flocculent but serves also as antiseptics. In Thailand used also for preparing of deodorants, better than other chemical substances. More about the good features can be read when googling. (but not liked by swimming pool shops, it disturbs their good business with their alchemy).

    Outside Kitchen Wall 1

This was one of the things I was going to tackle once we moved in - a straightforward, block wall, rendered and painted tom match the existing.

All well within my capability, but then i got to thinking... K.Pot can probably do this quicker than me, has the blocks, the render and the paint, and I would only be starting it NEXT time I visit, which would be the anticipated move-in time.

I will be looking at organising, or building the kitchen myself, but again, not 'til i visit next time. While doing that, we need a cooking area, most obviously outside, as per out current arrangements.

So of course... we can transplant our existing kitchen outside until the inside one is ready!

Pretty much finished apart from the sanitaryware / shower to fit. In fact all the sanitary-ware is not fitted.
Interestingly, he told us that hes going to fit them last so there is no temptation from the workforce to use then!

A very pleasant diversion from building...

We are flat out at TD Towers making good use of my limited time in LoS before yet again returning to UAE but I saw the posting of another TD member, saying he and his wife would be in BKK for the Christmas week.

Maybe a chance to put face to name, and meet with one of my thread contributors and fellow builders....?

Lets see... PM sent...Positive PM received...

...and thus it was that PJ and I found ourselves in the Royal Orchid Sheraton down by the river in the charming company of BiP and his lovely wife Ahe

what started as a chat over coffee became the lunch we almost missed! I don't know where the time went but suddenly we were in the buffet and the clock was ticking!!

A great meet up - the first of many im sure... thanks for the hospitality...lunch on me next time!!

Lol - no idea what the girls were chatting about - they were talking even more than us, but i bet it wasn't house building!

    Anyway here's the group shot:

    and the happy couple...

    I mean..him 'n' me

    And the lovely ladies

A really great day - thanks guys!

    Bannister and balcony bosses

We got some before, well K.Pot did - but they were too small.

When we went to BKK last week we bought the right sized ones...

They will then be painted in to match the railings

Yeah, the styptic pencil. Discontinued after the link to Alzheimers was found.
Just saying, be cautious about putting it in your water.

"However, the primary concern with alum is long-term exposure to low levels of the chemical. Aluminum, from your diet or healthcare product, can cause degeneration of nervous system tissue. It is possible that exposure to aluminum could lead to an increased risk of certain cancers, brain plaques or Alzheimer's Disease."

    ^Alum demonizing?

I haven't found the citation in the link you mentioned.

Anyway, still it hasn't been discovered what is a cause of Alzheimer.

And anyway, the same web speaks quit favorable for Alum:

    Uses of Alum
Alum has several household and industrial uses. Potassium alum is used most often, although ammonium alum, ferric alum, and soda alum may be used for many of the same purposes.

-purification of drinking water as a chemical flocculant
-in styptic pencil to stop bleeding from minor cuts
-the adjuvant in vaccines ( a chemical that enhances the immune response)
    -deodorant "rock"
-pickling agent to help keep pickles crisp
    -flame retardant
-the acidic component of some types of baking powder
-an ingredient in some homemade and commercial modeling clay
-an ingredient in some depilatory (hair removal) waxes
    -skin whitener
-ingredient in some brands of toothpaste
    https://www.thoughtco.com/what-is-alum-608508

And anyway, we speak about "alum", not "aluminum". As from many clever sources can be learned there are few kinds of alum, type of a chemical compound, usually a hydrated double sulfate salt of aluminium, potassium alum, sodium alum, ammonium alum.

Wiki says "In medicine, alum may also refer to aluminium hydroxide gel used as a vaccine adjuvant."

In fact, I do not use the alum (SaanSom) for drinking water but for clarifying of ironized bore water after oxydation (previously sped up by chlorin). An example what miracles the SaanSom can do I have shown in thread of my swimming pool,

My first water filling when listened to water experts:"add chlorine"

Thai Dhupp and Princess Joy's Thai House Build-06010805a-jpg

A miracle after 6 days when SaanSom added:

The Use of Alum for Lake Management

There is an obvious concern with lakes or reservoirs used as drinking water supplies. However, the water treatment process at many, if not most, water utilities uses alum as a clarifier before filtration anyway. Again, the raw water supply does not exceed drinking water standards shortly after an alum application.

There have been reports that aluminum is a cause of Alzheimer’s disease. However, recent epidemiological studies have found no association. In fact, the form of aluminum in lake water after an alum application, aluminum hydroxide, is the active ingredient in over-the-counter antacids. The issue here is the form of aluminum. While it is true that “free” aluminum has toxic properties, it is also very reactive and does not persist in this form. Where applied, the trade-off of short-term toxicity risk against phosphorus control is implicitly accepted.
    Issues & Concerns
Human health concerns are largely avoided simply because people do not drink untreated lake water. However, even if they did, aluminum concentrations in lake water are normally within EPA drinking water standards very shortly after bulk applications.

Alum is a safe and effective method to mitigate excess phosphorus in lakes and reservoirs. Note, there are many other methods and approaches to consider in managing lakes (see Wagner 2001). The concerns with using alum cited here can be managed or balanced.

    NALMS Positions

Alum is a safe and effective lake management tool.
Alum applications should be designed and controlled to avoid concerns with toxicity to aquatic life.
Watershed management is an essential element of protecting and managing lakes. In cases where watershed phosphorus reductions are neither adequate nor timely, alum is an appropriate tool to accomplish meaningful water quality objectives.

Interesting to know there is a Alum Lake in Czech Republic (obviously a world unique) originating from an ancient alum mining hundreds years ago. Nowadays very favorite for recreation and also for medical spa.

Another round of painting on the Sala woodwork to make it match better to the existing upper level

but first... this one was missed off from the new kitchen wall location. it actually shows the before so fairly important!

    Now back to the Sala:
