Bangkok: Anti-govt groups to rally on Sunday

Anti-govt groups to rally on Sunday

Anti-government groups plan to hold a mass rally to express their opposition to the Yingluck Shinawatra administration at the Royal Turf Club of Thailand on Sunday.

The groups revealed details of the rally at a press conference on Monday.

Their representatives were led by Gen Bunlert Kaewprasit, chairman of the Protect Siam Organisation, and about a dozen of its allies -- including the royalist Siam Samakkhi group and the Network of Citizen Volunteers to Protect the Land, the so-called multi-colour group.

Gen Bunlert, a former chief adviser to the army, said his group and its allies could not put up with the Yingluck-led government any longer. They gave three main reasons:

    1. The government allows attempts by a certain group to continue to overthrow the monarchy without trying to forestall it.

    2. The government serves as a proxy for fugitive former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra. It lacks efficiency in administration and good governance.

    3. The government has turned a blind eye to corruption.

The rally will be held under the slogan "Join Forces to Stop National Crisis and Disaster", he said.

The organisers will invite experts and academics to clarify the adverse effects of government policies to the public, such as the rice pledging scheme, he said.

The retired general said Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubamrung had asked to meet him on Wednesday afternoon but he did not know yet what Mr Chalerm wanted to talk about.

He insisted the rally would happen, even if Mr Chalerm asked him to cancel it.

Asked about what message the Sunday gathering will send to the public, Gen Bunlert said it was up to the people what kind of politics they wanted.

He denied a red-shirt accusation that his group was a splinter group of the yellow-shirt People's Alliance for Democracy. He was a soldier, not a yellow-shirt, and had never appeared on any PAD rally stage.

PAD spokesman Panthep Wongpuapan said his movement could not join the rally led by the Protect Siam Organisation because it had scheduled a public forum on Thailand’s future political reform in Nakhon Si Thammarat province.

Another reason, he said, was the rally was likely to attack only the current government, which was not in line with PAD’s aims to encouraged real, full-fledged democracy, not just demand that the poles of political power be switched.

However, PAD continued to support and cheer on the group for mobilising to protect the country’s interests.

In January, a United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship lawyer Kharom Polthaklang filed a complaint with the Crime Suppression Division against Gen Bunlert and PAD co-founder Sondhi Limthongkul, accusing them of inciting the general public to unrest on occasions and urging the military to mount a coup by claiming there had been attempts by a certain group to overthrow the monarchy.
"Slavery is the daughter of darkness; an ignorant people is the blind instrument of its own destruction; ambition and intrigue take advantage of the credulity and inexperience of men who have no political, economic or civil knowledge. They mistake pure illusion for reality, license for freedom, treason for patriotism, vengeance for justice."-Simón Bolívar

Sorry, but this is just retarded....perhaps they should read the results of the latest ABAC poll.

Clearly the people of this country don't want or need this.

Retarded or just terminally thick liars? I had a quick look at their website. A lot of bollocks about civil war. They list their aims as protecting the monarchy, joining with others to protect the monarchy, and admiring the monarchy. I'm sure the demonstration will be a big success.

jesus christ, even though they might have a few points right about the corruption, it's not a reason to stage another demonstration
