What Happened to Gullivers Restaurant in Bangkok

Granted I have not been to Bangkok in over a year, but I was in for a shock visiting Gullivers Restaurant on Sukhumvit Soi 5 today

At 12:00 I was use to the place being full, however, there were, including 2 of us, a total of 4 customers?

Long gone are all the freelancers playing pool looking for farangs

When I received the new menu I immediately knew why

The prices have gone out of sight

I would not expect a 125 baht steak sandwich to rise to 260 baht

Or a generic bottle of water to be 30 baht

Or a glass of Ice Tea to be 65 baht

The 80 baht Massaman Curry, how 180 baht

They have added steaks that are priced over 200 baht higher than Western Sizzler

Must have a new cook as well

Potatoes in the massaman were not cooked

A pork steak was raw in the middle

When they recooked the pork did not make any sauce that came with it

    A 970 total baht castastrophe

Hard to believe how much this place has changed but the waitress said since the price increases the place has been pretty empty

The Thai philosophy to increase pricing due to no customers is pretty much in line with all the paper college degrees they hand out here.

No customers? Lets double the prices to make up for it

The whole area of Sukhumvit seemed to be void of the 10,000 usual farangs the last time I visited there?

12:00 or 24:00? The place always cleared out when the other clubs got going.

I haven't been there in a year but I could see the price changes doing it in. I always thought the food was overpriced as it was. There are plenty of other places in the area.

I'm sure the FL's and punters will be back once the flooding subsides.
You've got Soi Arab nearby anyway- why eat at Gullivers?

Could it be something to do with the floods being 30cm deep and the people being 24cm tall

Not too many people visiting BKK these days I would think. Pattaya has Gulliver's too. Maybe everyone moved there.

As long ago as October 2010, Gulliver's trade had dwindled to almost zero in the afternoons. Every time I went there to use their free wi-fi there were more staff than customers. The staff were also very poor. They were playing around instead of serving customers properly. They mixed up orders and if one reached for the little container with the bills in, they rushed to total the bill as though they wanted the customers out of the place. The food was expensive then too.

There were a few girls there who were probably on the game but there were so few customers that they all settled for a coffee and a chat with their mates.

That particular part of Sukhumwit is not well blessed with eating places. Nice Indian food down Soi 11 but that was also very expensive for what it was.

I remember seeing old guys sitting in there drinking water chatting to the waitresses at times. You can't make money when you get these folks. 30baht/hour! Same at Soi 7 sometimes.

It's blessed with Soi Arab, which is both a very good eating place, and a good place for people watching (if you liked the Star Wars bar scene).

Only been to Gullivers once when I met up with Blake 7 and Butterfly before moving on after 1 beer.

Apart from a few good eating places in that area (as Sabang suggested) I rarely venture down that end of lower Sukhumvit.

No, you and Blake 7 were sitting on the right hand side of the bar when I arrived.

Then we left for some Arab food before hitting Soi Cowboy.

Walk out the front of Gullivers, and look across diagonally to your right- there is a small sub soi almost in front of you.
Walk along there for 50- 100 metres, and you're in a parallel universe- Kebab heaven. Technically, it's called Sukhumvit Soi 3/1, but you won't exactly need a degree to work out why it's called Soi Arab.
Most places on Soi Arab don't sell booze- so Gullivers is a useful oasis in that regard.

Yep, and the Africans in their colorful kaftans, etc. It's quite a scene. I usually pop by for a meal and a gawk when I'm in the wet mango.

    I've never liked Gullivers

Always seemed to be devoid of atmosphere,

If I wanted to sit around hookers, I would much rather sit in the Bier Garden on the next Soi

Thank you. I walked in the wrong direction and found myself by Soi 11.

Is that some kind of hubbly bubbly pipe ?

Do you have any recommendations for Soi Arab, Sabang ?

I've heard there's some nice eateries there, but I never did go

The food down there is great, just walk along until you see something you like, sit and order, enjoy try them all if you must.

Have a blow if you want on the pipe I mean
