Christmas Day Lunch???

We will be in Bangkok over Christmas (3 months) and looking for somewhere to get a decent traditional Xmas feed on Xmas day. I've looked at some of the larger hotel chains, but the thought of spending 3000 - 4000 baht each for the mrs and sister-in-law (who hardly eats) isn't really what I'm looking for.

I'm looking for a few suggestions for Xmas Day brunch, preferably under 2000 baht per person.

We are staying near Chong Nonsi, but anywhere in central Bangkok we would consider.

Why not go to one of the traditional British Pubs such as The Londoner or The Royal Oak (both on Sukhumvit)? Should be around THB 1,400 per person.

Went to the Dubliner last year. All 3 floors were pretty packed and paid about 1000 baht a head for a 3 course with all the trimmings if my memory serves me right.
No wine or drinks on the table, but you got a Christmas cracker.
Food was par for the course, Would have been nice to have a free pint or glass of wine thrown in.
If you are gonna take the English/Irish pub route, then you WILL have to book in advance to get a decent table/timeslot.

Just checked out their webite and the Xmas dinner menu is up and they are taking reservations now.
Looks exactly the same as last years.

Just gonna quickly back-up why I posted about the Dubliner for Strongarm.

My post was not a glowing one of the Dubliner for Xmas food-wise, but if you have to chip-in for sister and missus (who probally won't touch most of the food), then it's best to scale back and go for atmosphere rather than the culinary delights.

Having done many a BBQ, you still got to clean the mess up!

Save up some money and do Xmas dinner proper!
Where people cook and serve you the dinner!

Went to a pub where the waitresses had '' we are the dogs bollocks'' printed on their T shirts, could never find it again, was it the Londoner? part was bar, the rest to tables and chairs, had bangers and mash that day, they must do a Christmas dinner.

I feel sorry for those that have to sit in a pub or hotel with a lot of strangers eating mass prepared shit buffet food.

Why not save money and do it yourself. Remember to give your bird's wrong end a good stuffing with fistfuls of sage and onion while she licks your brussel sprouts before throttling your turkey for at least 6 hours on a low heat.

it's alright, they have their own draught beer which they serve in those proper old style pint glasses. make me feel all manly. the food is pretty good. but it's bloody freezing in there sometimes..

I,m afraid I have to agree here , each to their own but I wish to God we had enough holiday left to get away at xmas to escape the whole bloody fake charade , and if I was lucky enuf to be 6000 miles away the last thing I would be looking for would be turkey + sprouts

On Christmas Day, five years ago, the smell of our turkey cooking seemed to diminish after 11.00 am. The cooker had broken down. We had bacon, eggs and new potatoes.

Went to Thailand because Christmas was a hard time for me so thought go some place they do not celebrate Christmas!

When I arrived and realized that piped ' I'am Dreaming Of a White Christmas' was being entered every level of Thai Society I realized if I went to Phuket or Krabbi I would be surrounded by White folks all into the Happy Christmas routine.

Went to Leoi much better, hardly any farang and only hotel had piped music. Had a great Christmas dinner at some ones farm in the sticks, she cooked her best dog for me!!!

'cos it's christmas!!!! Ithe last time I had a roast dinner... was... uh last christmas. I GET TO EAT YORKSHIRE PUDDINGS!!!! and wear a hat!!!!!! a pull a cracker (instead of the usual dog looking bird ).

I'm even gonna put up xmas decorations in my house this year...

Thanks for the input, all valid points (well, mostly), and you've completely confused the hell oughta me!!!!

I would prefer to do without the Xmas celebrations, but two years in Australia for the mrs and she now loves the whole Xmas thing, so the "traditional" lunch was more for her.

I was actually looking at the Dubliner, but a few bad reports on the food has put that one to bed.

Will have a look at the Londoner, or I might even harden up and go the expensive festivities at one of the larger hotels, just to ensure the food will be decent.

I'll be sure to add a report to TD on whatever we decide to do.

Might want to shoot off an email to Bourbon St pub in Washington Square and see what they're up to. I know they're doing a big thing for Thanksgiving.
