Thumbs up Nakhon Pathom - Venus Inn & Local Eatery

Teak Door wanted more info for Nakhon Pathom but I didn't see where to contribute, hence this thread.
We've travelled the 1700km between Phuket and my wife's village in Chiang Rai many, many times and on the way up we always stopped at Nakhon Pathom (it was a good bit past the half way mark so broke the journey well).

We always stayed at The Venus Inn - a 'curtain motel' with hourly rates as well as their overnight rate of 500 baht (may be more now). It was new and very clean and comfortable, as well as being cheap. The interior of the rooms was 'Classic Roman' (!) with columns round the bed, mirrored ceilings, and (in some rooms) two way mirrored glass between the bedroom and bathroom! Oh yes, and 24hr porn on TV if you wanted it and if the police 'sweetener' was up to date! The motel is on the main highway but is tricky to spot - it's on the right as you drive North with a large, high sign in red neon but in Thai not English. We haven't been there for almost two years now so it may have gone a bit tattier like so many places.

When we stayed there, the highlight of our stopover was always the restaurant on the opposite side to the motel but three 'U-turns' South of it. This restaurant is right on the main road - it's noisy, unattractive and not particularly clean but is usually busy with Thais (no self-respecting farang would be seen dead there!). But the food........oh the food - some of the best we've had in Thailand and dirt cheap. The place is run by a big fat (friendly) Thai who has an enormous fat dog that just lies around (too fat to move!) but it may be dead by now. That resto was always the highlight of the otherwise pretty miserable, often hazardous, drive up North.

We now live in Chiang Rai but will be going down to Phuket in February for a couple of weeks but we'll time our drive down to suit - I can't wait to repeat our experience in Nakhon Pathom!

Like to hear more. But in reality you were an hour from BKK. If the restaurant is Thai and full of people you have to know its good. To be inexpensive and a great value makes it all the better. It means the owner is into food not money. The money will come over time believe me.

We may have only been an hour out of BKK but that is somewhere I avoid like the plague when it comes to driving! I don't think the resto prices will ever increase to farang-targeted levels but will stay reasonable for the locals.
