Rompo Mansion: 6000 Thb electric for 20 nights!

I stayed at Rompo Mansion (Rama 4, Klong Toi Market area) for 20 nights .. 30 day rental but 10 nights on Samui
23k per month + utilities

the electric was billed for 6000 + add in telephone calls (1 day before i got a mobile ) & water.
8000 Thb deposit = 500 Thb back.

the room had a washing machine so the electric could be high .. but 300 Thb per day.

I am returning & asked Rompo Mansion about their electric rate this time = no response to 2 emails asking for their electric rate.

I am now considering the Trendy Sukhumvet Soi 13 .. the owner advertised utilities paid on a web site.. a conversation revealed 1500 Thb electric credit.
was assured that no way electric could be over 1500.

is electric over charge a common scam?

Thais habitually do not respond to e-mail, even if it's a sales lead. No chance if it's anything remotely unpleasant, too easy to ignore. Try calling them.

Electric/water overcharge is easy to control -- ask for the rates, photograph the meter when you move in, and perhaps check it again a week into the lease. If they see you checking, they probably won't try scamming you.

Reasonable electricity rates are 6 baht/unit. Electricity can get expensive (2k-3k/mo if you run one aircon all the time), but 6k is a scam.

How big is the apartment for 23k/mo? You can find a serviced (cleaning 2-3x/week) studio room near Victory Monument for 14-15k or so (more convenient to transport and far less slummy than Khlong Toey).

Anyway, it's an apartment block, not a hotel, so I'm not sure you can 'book'.

No way. I have a washer machine, run the air conditioning 10 hours a night and leave a TV running 24/7 so it looks like there is someone home when I am gone. My electric bill has never been over 1700 baht a month, and some of my Thai co-workers express amazement it could be that high.

I thought it unusual they require only cash deposit & rent payment.

they answered my 'electric rate' email this am .. 5 B per unit electric... which means I was 'using' 60 units per day while I was in Bkk.
+ had a steady GTG (ROTFLOL) that turned down / off the A/C at every f'n opportunity.

^, Try 'or', i've queried an overcharge on electric at a couple of medium term hotels i've stayed at.

They rechecked the meter in my presence and on both occasions and came up with another figure. Coincidence?

If the aircon is old and shite, and on a lot, it is possible to get these kind of bills. Any modern(ish) aircon(s) (less than 5 years old?) should be under 2000 baht even if you're running two for pretty much the whole time. The other electricity is small.

I just got a bill: 1,531 baht. That's a 4 bedroom house with 3 aircons ) one is on for about 25% of the day night) and the missus does at least one load of washing every day; maybe two because we have kittens and they are messy... You 'hotel' bill should be no more than this, imo.

A shitty 20 year old air-con unit can really rape the electricity though, so...

They receive the electricity at around 3.5 Baht per Kilowatt hour and if they put a fair surcharge of just say about 10% that would be acceptable.

Unles you have a half Olympic size swimming pool in your apartment they have ripped you off blind.

Next time ask for an individual metre reading upon arrival and a reading upon check-out and then work it out according to the electric rate they have quoted you.

you are probably through the government grid though at something like 2 baht a unit.

Some condos are 8b per unit so would cost you 7k+ doing the same in one of those.

as a certified 'noob' i would hesitate to ask to see the meter .. but that is the only way to verify their reading / my usage. photo the meter is an excellent idea.

I pay around 5 bt per unit at home, which I thought was about same through much of the country. When I travel or stay in a condo/serviced this usually goes up to about 8bt/unit, but wouldn't mind signing up for CM's source at 2 bt.
