Wonderful memories! Fantastic photos - both detail and quality! Thanks. I first came to Thailand in the Fifties, not much had changed, unfortunately I didnt have a camera then! I now live out at Lamlukka and all the canals have those large fishing nets strung out over them.

Wow, it doesn't look that different from when I arrived in the early 1980s... and yes, the people in Bangkok were much more farang friendly in those days.

Thankx for the pics and if you have any more, I'd love to see them.

well noted. enamel ware is a far cry from the plastic bag addiction in current day thailand and sea. When I was there I noticed that I used 24 bags one day. 5 of them for a take out soup. living in canada i only get internet news stories and the 'plastic bag addiction' was a recent headline.

thanks for the shots. they're treasures.

Is it me, or does the water look cleaner in the photos?

    Hi all

After a long delay I am now ready to continue posting my old slides.

Most of these are from my second stay in 1976 during the military takeover in that year.

First batch is from my hotel and around it. I stayed at the Rajah Hotel, Sukhumvit. If my google results are correct and the hotel is still at the same location, it was Sukhumvit Soi 4. It looked quite nice and it was still cheap. It had to be as I stayed for 5 weeks and never was wealthy.

The room had a nice living area beside the bed.

    Some views from the hotel

Right across the soi were some soup kitchens, all the equipment actually mounted on bicyles and moved in and out every day. Delicious soups I tried regularly.

From the area close to my hotel.

This was the restaurant I ate regularly at. Mostly thai customers but also catering to Farang. They had a Thai/English/German menu. But even though my english was very poor at the time I soon gave up trying to understand the german.
The food was delicious. Best was a dish with shrimps wrapped in Lumpia wrappers and fried with a sweet and hot sauce.

This must be Sukhumvit but I am not 100% sure.

Want to see how a real camera looks like? These two photos were from a photo studio at Sukhumvit.

No comment on the next ones.

This guy tried to offer me one of the girls.

Greened, wow just like when I first arrived in 78. If its Sukhumvit in the photo its out towards Prakanong. What a great thread. We can see clearly what it used to be.

No air in those taxis, no meters, you negotiated. They had little fans for the driver and passengers to help with the heat. But believe me without the high rise buildings Bangkok was hot, but not like now.

A few shots from Lumpini Park.

This photo is not very good but I thougt someone may be interested. This guy is flying a plane. At the time no remote controls were available. These planes flew on wires in a circle. Separate wires allowed for some control. A good pilot coud do some awful maneuvers that way.

    Some planes.

She's cute. But I had nothing to do with her. I just asked if I can take that photo.

One to show that slides from that time can almost be of acceptable quality except the white spots which are overbright.

Great pictures. They bring back a lot of memories. When I see all the changes that have happened since you took those pictures I feel kind of sad that things have changed so much. Have to say, I much prefered it then compared to now. A lot slower and a lot quieter.

PS. I bet some of that furniture from the Rajah would be worth something now if it was still in good condition. Very trendy.

Seemed busy and noisy at the time though.

Now some pics about Bangkok temples, to prove I have seen them too and because I made an important discovery there.

    Worshippers at the Golden Buddha

Now to that important discovery. I have found clear proof of aliens here on earth.
One ancient and very advanced rocket motor.

And statues of the lizard men. Hiding their tails under those ridiculous coats.

These were my last pictures from Bangkok. There are a few more from other places. Very few from Koh Larn off Pattaya. Some more from Chiang Mai.

I do wonder if I should put those in the Chiang Mai forum or better continue this thread. Any comments welcome.

What is it with your photographs, is it the camera, the film or what, they just seem to be a lot richer and more detailed than new digital images?

Not really. It is old slides, that I copied using a DSLR. Most of them faded and with some ugly violet hue in the dark areas. After that a lot of fiddling with photoshop to get rid of the worst flaws. In some cases the grain of the film makes it look like added sharpness.

I will prepare a before and after for comparison.

I give two examples of before-after

    First the camera

    Second a place outside Chiangmai

Both from very poor quality slide scans and both improved but still very visible faults after postprocessing.

More of Chiangmai coming soon. I am still in postprocessing them.

For now the few I have on Koh Larn off Pattaya. This was during my first stay in 1974.

I have almost no recollection of Pattaya and no photos.

Took a trip to Koh Larn with that black haired dictionary. A resort Koh Larn Vac was under construction but not yet officially open. Only daytrips, food and drink by beach vendors who left in the evening, together with the tourists.

    The dictionary.

She negotiated a stay overnight in one already finished bungalow but without electricity over night as the generators cut off. Also food only what we had bought from the beach vendors until they returned the next morning.

After the boats had left, we had the place all to ourselves. We did not see even any workers on the site.

    Takeovers,
I've a bunch of the 70's slides also, I'll try and get em up sometime.
One of my recollections was just how Bangkok hit on all of your senses in particular the smells and noise in those days. Early mornings especially with the old coffee stalls, monks everywhere in the streets and everyone burning incense ,the jasmine galands were just so more intoxicating too.You could smell the Erawan Shrine a block away.( nowdays the jasmine is chilled and that kills off the perfume).Heaps more sidewalk food stalls too than nowdays.
There were more klongs too and boy did they pong badly, they were open sewers.
It was all pretty heady stuff.
You could hardy go anywhere without getting a greeting from passers by- a far cry compared to nowdays where I kind of feel a sense of distain towards foreigners from the locals when I walk down Silom Rd.
Sure was a good time to be in Thailand.
