    Manhattan Hotel Below Average

The Manhattan Hotel is located on Suk Soi 15, near the Asoke BTS and MRT. A great location, close to all the major shopping, nightlife places, etc. A stay in the superior room cost only $25 per night (precisionreservation.com).

A decent sized room and bed.

Plenty of closet space and decent selection in the mini-bar.

Everything looks alright, so what is the problem? First off, the A/C was not working properly. It was freezing in the room. When I explained the problem to the manager, she said that this is a problem in all the rooms and she would give me an extra comforter. I told her I didn't want an extra comforter, I wanted her to fix the A/C. Never happened.

The next big problem was the cable. Since Thai channels are useless, I won't even bother listing them. The only English channels were a sports channel that played obscure Indian sports (two blokes tossing a ring over a badminton net was one highlight) and Channel News Asia, or "24 hours of news on how Singapore's citizens can get rich working with the Chinese" No CNN, BBC, UBC Movies, etc.

Instead of staying here, go down the road and stay at the Somerset Hotel. I had a problem with my A/C there also, and they sent a technician to fix it within the hour. Although they also have a meager selection of channels, you do get UBC movies and CNN. And their breakfast buffet is better than Manhattan's.

Strikes me as a bit bizarre to visit Bangkok to watch TV

Take the TV out of the room and try to let it to a Thai.

The "Somerset" changed hands end of last year and is now called "Dreamhotel". It's a bit of a walk from the main rd in the dark, and rates are well above $25 for walk-in punters.

You're right, stroller. The Somerset is no more. Dream Hotel rates start at $119. The Woraburi Sukhumvit on Soi Nana is decent place for those on a budget ($20). Of course, if you have a passport from an Arab country or India, they won't let you book a room.
