    sonically or atmospherically funky gogos

    Hi all -

i am on the look out for gogos that have tolerable music. i am from the states and will expire immediately if i hear any more eagles, dire straits, black eyed piss...yes, i appreciate that the attraction of these establishments is not in fact tasteful tune selection, but for me groovy, funky or just unusual sounds make the primary focus, anthropological investigations of a refined sort, all the more enjoyable. extreme volume and wretched song choices on the other hand drive me away.

over years of unfocused research i have noted a few places that could work at nana: mandarin, rainbow 3 i think, on second floor, maybe rainbow 1 downstairs in the front corner.

at cowboy: the western style pool and live band bar on left corner as you enter from asok side, where the first band used to be led by ancient Ut, Ventures-fan and former GI entertainer (also a former neighbor in dusit). this place was fun for the strange combination of surf rock and jonny cash tunes, septuagenarians and isaan-escapees. Shark Bar - have heard some occasional funkiness in there.

the Pong: one of the live music corner bars had a funky band there a couple of years ago, sure they still do. i like some of the vintage 70's - 80's club interiors but not so much the scene otherwise.

I saw an early 80's doc on LOS years ago that had just a moment of footage of a soi cowboy lady dj spinning some crazay disco which was thrilling...wish it were still like that,,,

Any suggestions? I appreciate any contributions to my ongoing, possibly ground-breaking, research...

I used to take my own stuff in, had to bribe the buggers to play it mind. They all played shite when I went to NEP two weeks back, bloody boring and glad I was not paying.

Is the OP sure he should still be visiting gogo's at this advanced stage in his life?? I feel a nice line dancing club would be more up his avenue.

I don't know it's all bollocks in my opinion, far better of looking a scantily dressed young girls dancing to morlam or luktung, lam cing can get particularly dirty, and it's free for the most part

Yeah - bring on the mo lam and luk thung rec's if you have them. sometimes a bar will toss out a luk thung song and it is always a treat. does anywhere do that often?

and funky is primarily r&b, soul, electronic, disco (maybe) music but i am using a very expanded definition, which could also mean distinctive, colorful.

They used to playThai at the end of the night, but in rainbow 2 weeks back they did not, I'd be interested to hear of a bar that does. They always say customer no like.

Most of the a go go's here in Patters (with a few exceptions) play ear-splitting loud tecno/rap style music, so it really does not matter much what they play, the punters are deaf as doorknobs within 10 min.

And an oldie from Mr.Funk himself:
Close your eyes while listening and imagine them girls shake and wiggle the goodies...

Not a go go bar but try the Saxophone Pub at the Victory monument. They have live R&B, Funk, Blues and Jazz.
May have changed but the Safari Bar in Patpong had a great selection of music back in the day.
