    Will the BTS be bombed?

I think its only a matter of time.

Being paranoid of dying from a bomb, I always move to another car if I see an arab with a waistline that appears larger than it should be (might have eaten too much hummus, or it may be something more sinister under his clothes). Silly thing is, it'll probably be an Asian (Malay, Indonesian etc) that actually does the deed.

How often does this happen, do strangers in a foreign land you do not understand nor care for, frighten you more here than back in safe, civilised Boremouth?

    Cheez nobody appreciates Smeg.

He's got a point though why he's singling out the BTS I don't know. I'd heard there was an attempt to bomb the Central Shopping complex in Chiang Mai about six months ago. The bombers so the rumour goes were caught but no word in the newspapers.

True, we rather have news of Pattaya Noi shooting her Somchai in the foot.
It´s totally tourist irrelevant but may scare away tourist to other Thai destinations

    I agree.

My theory on why nothing much has happened by way of terrorism north of the Malay peninsula is simply that Thais stick their noses into their neighbours business to a much greater extent than many other parts of the world. Too hard for a terrorist cell to exist more than a few days!

As for dying that way, doesn't bother me all that much, as long as it it's not too painful.

You die in a bombing, you get memorial services, your name in all the papers, anniversary services, your family get compensation and attention, all kinds of crap!

You die in a hospice from colon cancer and you are forgotten before you've even left the planet!

I can think of quite a few shopping centres that I'd like removed from the face of Bangkok. Any volunteers?

The key word here is paranoid - which you admit to being, and most certainly are. lf that is the case, go find a nice safe cave to crawl up into. Get mum and dad to hold your hand and check it out first in case there is an arab or two hiding in there with all the other creepy crawlies.

Even if terrorists blew up a full BTS train every year, you would still have a higher chance of dying in a traffic accident while in Thailand......

Or, if farang, by falling from a balcony in Pattaya.
Any error in tact, fact or spelling is purely due to transmissional errors...

The carriages are so packed during the rush hour a number of small crude bombs would inflict massive casualties see; Mumbai, London, Madrid. However this form of mass casualty attack, outside their area of operation is unlikely to be undertaken by the Southern insurgents.. A strike in Thailand directed by Al Qaeda linked militants such as Jemmah Islamiyya or by a cell of Al Qaeda itself would more likely target tourist areas such as Khao San Road,. Those guest houses and bars filled with gap year Israeli soldiers make inviting targets…. Even to old mad_dog

If the Southern insurgents wanted to hit a target in Bangkok they would have done so long ago.

It is pretty apparent by now they only carry out attacks in the provinces they regard as theirs. They could have done Phuket, Krabi, Samui, Bangkok etc. pretty easily if they put their mind to it, but the absence of any such attacks should tell us something.

There is a small chance Al Quaida may attack something here, yes...

Blowing up the BTS would be most effective and pack the most dramatic punch if one of the concrete columns holding up the track around Victory Monument was blown up just as the train was passing overhead.

That would be tragic of course but it would be an impressive sight also.

I hope it never happens, should the FBI read this I would surely get a knock on the door and would subsequently be accused of giving the terrorists ideas... Dunno - could you be arested for that?

If that's the case, Smeg should go to jail for putting the idea in my head to begin with.

You surely would, if you happened to "incidentally" be at the scene, capturing this "tragic but impressive sight" on your camcorder after this comment!
You're on the watchlist for now.

That would require a considerable amount of high explosives which would have to be very carefully positioned. These coloums are reinforced high strength concrete. You could probably drive a truck into one at high speed, and it would barely leave a mark. Blowing up an explosive device next toa column would do very little damage since the blast would be deflected away from it. Now if you drilled a hole, and place the explosives inside.....but this is rather difficult to do without people noticing.....

If you are trying to achieve maximum destruction and casualties, there are much easier ways to go about it.

May seem difficult with people about, but that's precisely the type of boldness that remains invisible to the naked eye in a crowded place.

Reminds me of a coup many years ago, I think it was Maples furniture store in Tottenham Court Road...during the Xmas madness a crew of workmen in overalls were being supervised by a couple of suits with clipboards, to fill a double trailer which was parked right outside. Everybody thought this was legit, and a double trailer parked and being filled outside the store didn't raise a single eyebrow, not by shoppers, staff, or police.

Does anyone really know who placed the bombs there, or are we still at the speculation stage? I confess to not having read the news for a few days.
