How do you feel about Bangkok?

Bangkok residents profess themselves to be the “least happy” of Thais, citing family problems, excessive materialism and a lack of kindness in their communities as the main factors in their unhappiness.

Only 18.5 per cent of Bangkok residents were optimistic that they would be happier soon, compared to 52.9 per cent of respondents in the South, the most cheery lot of all sample groups. Asked the major cause of their despondency, many Bangkokians complained of family problems and a lack of good role models and political leaders. They also faulted neighbours for being unkind and unhelpful, saying people in their community were generally sour and disrespectful.

Indeed, that's what Thai people always tell you: people in Bangkok (as opposed to "upcountry") are no good; greedy, selfish, unfriendly, etc. etc. But I must say I don't really share that view. At least my neighbours are generally not "unkind, unhelpful, sour and disrespectful"......! However, if it were not for the relative plentiful supply of TEFL work in BKK, I wouldn't hang around for very long.

I think most people in bangkok are miserable because they have to live there for work and don't want to live there by choice.
Very similar to other large cities i have lived in, especially frankfurt.

Same in most major cities isn't it??? People just get lost ion the masses, traffic etc...

The traffic situation is just terrible, so much wasted time & pollution.

Bangkokians generally have to wake up 4-5:00am just to get to work before 8:00am.

Drive down the street & miss a turn, then you're are screwed.

They've gotta do something about the street vendors also.

^^^At least 3 or 4 hours a day CMN, which does tend to leave a spare 20-21, although I'm in the habit of sleeping for part of that.

Except on Saturday and Sunday, I refuse to wrok weekends as I need my rest

Well, I always thought bike was short for bicycle and motorbike was short for motorbicycle, s there shouldn't really be any confusion.

One sight that I could very well do without in BKK. Still, as I tell my students who are under performing in class, "Well Thailand needs motorcycle taxi drivers as well as business men, doctors & pop stars" Quite often my meaning goes right over their dear little heads.

if you want my opinion cantona choose you location with care. i used to live near the mall lad phrao and it stunk!!
trafifc was always a nightmere and my condo always seemed to get a good coat of black dust weekly from polution!
if you can get a condo that is both high up and well down a quiet soi you should be ok.
i now live in the burbs so it is quiet at night and not too much traffic.
BKK in its self is ok coz it has lots to offer, you will soon become a proficient user of both the bts and mrt.
