    The British Club, Bangkok

Is anyone here a member of the Britsh Club in Bangkok, or perhaps you were a member or even been there in the capacity of guest?

I have been there several times, attending various functions & enjoying the facilities as a non-member. I'm seriously considering joining but wanted some more info. from their regulars, before parting with a relatively hefty sum of money. In additional to the facilities, I've found it a great place to network, which is one of the keys to success in Thailand, I think.

^ Are you suggesting that teachers don't have a need to network? I don't think one can have too many friends in this wonderful country. I'd far rather build relationships amongst the membership of the BC than in the myriad of beer bars of Bangkok.

I have been several times as a guest and although they do a really good cauliflour cheese I don't think it is good enough to warrant the (no doubt) riduculous membership fees. Last time I was there it was full of bored housewives and screming kids - maybe they are international school teachers but not the kinda folks I would wanna network with. But then I am extremely antisocial, and the only network I do is... well... this actually.

Ouch! Sometimes growing self-awareness on the road to enlightenment is painful.

    Just curious.

Perhaps I am a little naive like CMN.

I wouldn't have thought the British Club would offer many networking oportunities for a TEFLer, with the possible exception being that you were trying to get out, and fairly minimal networking opportunities for a fully qualified teacher at an international school, who would be better served networking in other environments.

I don't have any friends and I don't want any.

I think networking in the Thai expat environment would be a hard slog.

Way too many tossers, liars, cheats, and wankers...and they're just the guys you would actualy share a beer with!

Even TEFLers need a place to stay & to know where the best deal is to be had in town for a car, amongst other things. Are you a TEFLer or empoloyed in some other profession?

From an expatriate Englishman who's in the motor trade. And yes, I did have the vehicle thoroughly checked & independently valued before making the purchase.
