A 'Nice' Bar for Friday After Work Drinks

I know this thread should be elsewhere, but more people are in the lounge and I want some ideas before 5-00 pm. Mod's can move it where they like after that...

Looking for somewhere different for an after work drink - 6-00 to 8-00 kind of thing. Near a BTS. Not too expensive. Expatish is fine. Maybe even with a happy hour. I am hanging out for a couple of cold ones in decent atmoshpere...where I can even drink standing up, like any self-respecting Aussie would do. Place to take the missus, so not a girly bar...

Ones I already know that fit the bill are Barbican, Xchange, Robin Hood, Dubliner, Londoner, O'Reillys, Hard Rock...but want to go somewhere new.

    Any ideas?

Cheap Charlies has atmosphere, you can stand up, you buy your drinks at the bar and gets some characters at times.

    Beers cheap too.

Diplomat bar in the Conrad used to be a popular Friday after work venue (for a couple before moving on). But I haven't been in there this year yet and it's June already

Its a damn shame that the kind of places you refer to, and the kind of places I miss (nicely furnished, spacious, comfortable pub where one can happily waste a few hours with friends) are few and far between in Bangers, and if they exist then they are more expensive than in the UK

Witches Tavern any good? It looks ok from the outside.

Witches Tavern used to be full of freelance tarts. Not the place you wanted to take your missus to - but it may have changed

That place baffles me. Its just like a bunch of westerners standing outside a 7/11 drinking cheap beer, but with a rickedy bar not a 7/11.

And the first person to get there every evening must feel awkward

The Witches Tavern is ok. If there are freelancers there, they are not obvious early in the evening.
It's just a bit far away from the Skytrain though I think.

I used to go there when I lived on Ekkamai 10.

Which one? It looks like there are two next door to each other, in typical Thai competitive style. The woman outside the left one opens the door for anyone who walks thru the soi, and always looks so dissapointed when they walk by and completely ignore her..

Cheap Charlies is now our favourite Friday arvo spot.

    I like it.

You always meet someone interesting there.

Some people have been going there for fifteen years or more.

The first one as you enter the soi (Caveat - I haven't been in there in 3 years)

I know Gullivers, After Work, etc...all OK as bars go, but not quite. Witches is actually OK, sponsors of my football team, but a bit too far away and doesn't liven up until later.

Yep, I'd class someone who consistently chooses to stand in a small Bangkok soi drinking beer for 15 years as "interesting"

not to mention the terrible food they serve and the ultra loud music when it's Friday night. Definitely a place to avoid.

How about Hard Rock Cafe ? should be nice.

Conrad is supposed to be really nice

I personally think the Barbican is the bestest pub in Bangkok. Good snacks, good range of beers, good early crowd, not too far from Sala Deng/Silom train stations. Good staff too. Not the cheapest, but you pay for what you get.

MtD - Friday night sundowner the Barb also won hands down in any vote we had. But in those days you could see the girls struting their stuff oustide the Japanese places, which always made things more interesting

    Sat/Sun the place was dead

If you think they're hard to find in Bangkok, try Korat....

they tend to arrive after 9.00pm or so - so i think earlier in the evening is prolly not so bad

perhaps a bit quiet, and a little far up the street also...

Just avoid Wednesday evenings at the Witches. Watching Wally chasing after white meat isn't a pretty sight!
